Freeway Art Honors Ramon Valera

Being a blogger, it’s so nice to be invited to intimate fashion events like the one from Freeway last tuesday, October 12, 2010.  I brought my mom with me to Freeway’s launch of the 4th National Artist Collectors’ Series honoring Ramon Oswald Valera, National Artist for Fashion.  There were about 20-30 people invited, mostly from the fashion industry & media.

Freeway is actually a brand that is a bit special to me.  I remember the 1st dress that I found so perfect & suitable for me was bought from Freeway.  The brand, having started in 1997, aims to offer products representing the most current international trends at local Philippines prices.  They continue to evolve and improve as time passes by.

This holiday season they are giving tribute to our very 1st National Artist for Fashion, Ramon Valera.  He was proclaimed National Artist last 2006 and was well known for his elegant gowns & ternos.  Even when he was young, it seems that fashion came naturally for him.  His mom would notice that the dolls displayed on the piano suddenly would have new clothes.  How cool is that?

What separates him from the others is that he was able sew a dress to perfection without even using a pattern.  He definitely mastered the art of embroidery & beadwork!

And he was also very picky with his clients, only a few fortunate women were able to wear his creations.  Among the few were Elvira Manahan, Margarita Romualdez, Susie Bayot Ortigas, Adelaida Mendoza, Maritess Pineda, Evelyn Teehankee, Fe Leyson Qua and Caridad Velez Leyson.

They were kind enough to allow us to view the original works of terno & gowns that Valera created for them.  It was a one-night only viewing that happened at the G/F of Glorietta 5.  I especially love the pink gown owned by Susie Bayot Ortigas.  Sometimes, I do wish I was alive during those times, oh well, at least we have Freeway! 🙂

Ramon Valera Original Gowns

Everyone was just so happy to see former first lady Imelda Marcos attend the event with us.  Of course, she wore an original Ramon Valera gown.  She graciously answered all questions thrown at her by host, Tessa Prieto-Valdez.  Madame Marcos is an advocate of Arts and was one of Valera’s clients.  I never thought she would actually have a great sense of humor.  They were fun to watch!   Other distinguished guests were Valera’s niece Peching Zulueta-Gomez, fashion designer Aureo Alonzo and National Museum of the Philippine’s curator Nick Legazpi, Jr.

Ramon Valera died in 1972 at the age of 59.  As we thought that we’ll never ever get to at least own any of his works or even an interpretation of it, we were all wrong.  Luckily, Freeway is featuring a collection that was inspired from the brilliant creations of National Artist for Fashion, Ramon Valera.  Valera’s signature of creative cut, colors and beadwork with embroidery is brought back through Freeway’s National Artist Collection.

The collection includes woven dresses, blouses & graphic t-shirts.  The interpretation of Valera’s work was done through beadwork, modern silhouettes, print images of his sketches & digital images of his beadworks.  I believe pictures can illustrate this further.  I have to say this though, it was also my 1st time to watch a fashion show live and in person 😛

Awesome collection right?  They definitely don’t compare to the original, but at least we have a bit of a tribute to the national artist by wearing clothes that were inspired by his works.  Thanks Freeway for making this possible, what a way to honor our Philippine National Artist for fashion!

Of course, there are always photo ops at every event.  Seems like a norm already in these times.  My mom & I wore dresses to the show.  And look at our picture below, does it even look like she’s my mom?  Don’t think so, many find it hard to believe.  I’m proud, I have an awesome yet so pretty mom! 🙂  I bet when we get to shop at Freeway during one of our shopping sessions, she would look better in those Valera-inspired clothes than when I wear them (we share clothes too!).

Ensembles Louis Claparols Holiday Collection

After the successful Debbie Co collection, Ensembles once again brought in one of the celebrated fashion designers of today, Louis Claparols.

Louis is currently the elected president of the Young Designer’s Guild (YDG).  He’s known to be a well-rounded designer bringing in something new in each fashion show.  Since it’s now the -ber months, Ensembles has launched its special holiday collection featuring his works.

Louis Claparols

The Claparols Holiday 2010 for Ensembles consists of clothes with retro-style prints.  The designer’s inspiration for his collection comes from things like architectures, graphic arts & even his favorite movies.  Wow, talk about talent!  You can really see that if you’re passionate about something, you can create something great from just about anything.

I love the simplicity of the designs because it accents the clothing perfectly without being too distracting.  And of course, the cut of the clothing really seems to compliment a woman’s figure, which is really important.  Because you can have the best looking clothes, but if it doesn’t fit well, then it’s just not worth even wearing.  The color choices are excellent too.  The overall feel of the line is that of versatility, style, art, and with a pop of wonderful colors.  This collection is truly perfect for a fashionable woman.

Here’s a preview of the collection:

  • Dresses (Php 1495-Php 1995)

The dresses really have a high cut for that sexy look.  But what’s great about the dresses is the versatility with which they can be worn, and the looks above are just some great examples of how to wear these chic dresses.  What’s more sexy than wearing boots with these fashionable dresses?  I honestly just love how they coupled it with leggings, boots & stockings.  As for me, it’s already perfect even without the added clothes.  Wow!  We can really create several looks with it.

  • Skirts (Php 1,095)

ensembles 4

The skirts are another perfect example of the versatility of this collection.  The designs are once again not too distracting, but will definitely get you noticed :p  The skirts are actually perfect for ladies who go to the office, because it’s still conservative enough, yet very professional in its cut.  But then you can transition for your late night date or gimik.  Such cool designs, I especially love the diamond collection.

  • Tops (Php 1,195-Php 1,495)

ensembles 5

ensembles 6

Very simple yet so trendy!  My favorite among the four is the one with the collar.  I can imagine pairing it with my skirt & also my pedal pushers.  This is the 1st time I’ve heard of Louis but I’m just blown away with this collection.  The tops really offer a variety in terms of style, so that I believe with this collection, there’s really something for everyone.

  • Trench Coats/Dresses (Php 1,395-Php 1,695)

ensembles 7

ensembles 8

Again, I keep mentioning the versatility of this collection.  And it continues with these dresses which doubles as a trench.  How cool is that!  And the fact that it’s sleeveless, I really love how they have taken fashion up a level.  I’m making sure that I get hold of one of those trench coats.  I’m set to buy the sleeveless trench dress w/ swirl details (the 1st picture).  I also took note of the different styles shown on the ramp, we can copy those styles in our everyday life when we wear those beautiful clothes.  I’m excited to get mine! 🙂

You can head on over to Ensembles Stores to see the Claparols 2010 Holiday Collection for yourself.   List of branches & also more information about the collection in their website.  Want more?  Follow them in Facebook & in Twitter.

Solo Larry Alcala Collection & Model Search

I just got news that one of my favorite clothing stores, Solo, has just launched its Pinoy Cartoonist Memorabilia Collection featuring Larry Alcala!  Oh my golly, I remember that I used to look forward to reading the Sunday newspaper since Larry Alcala had a popular cartoon series wherein we were tasked to find his images concealed in the cartoons.  The series was called Slice of Life which is a reflection of the unique aspects of everyday life in our country, the Philippines.

It’s really so nice that Solo chose to feature Larry Alcala’s works in their products.  Imagine having those awesome work on our shirts, dresses, long sleeves & accessories!  Wow!  I cannot wait to get hold of one.  I mean, fashion and art combined is just a great way to show off your personality and style.  For those who love great fitting clothes, wonderful eye-catching clothing, and great style, you really cannot go wrong with any of these great items!

  • His & Hers (Php795 to Php845)

his and hers solo

For many Filipinos, I think these are just really so great to wear.  Considering that we live in a warm to hot climate, having fashionable t-shirts like these combined with the one of a kind artwork is really a great way to stand out from the crowd.

  • Ladies’ (Php795 to Php1,795)

dresses solo

I looked at these dresses, and just said WOW at how they are fitted and styled.  Add the artwork and you have one amazing set of dresses.  It’s really just so cute!  I especially like the white dress with the pink styling!  And for those who need a trendy outfit for the day, to go out with friends, I think these dresses really will be great for such occasions.

ladies pants vest

I have a few of these type of clothes, but again, with SOLO’s added flair and the cartoon drawings, I don’t think we can find such items in any type of wardrobe.  Not even my wardrobe! hahaha :p

  • Men’s (Php795 to Php1,695)

men polo solo

I don’t usually mind men’s clothing since I don’t shop for it, but I looked at their collection for men and I was just so surprised at how fashionable and unique they were.  The designs are one-of-a-kind, and I honestly wouldn’t mind my fiancé wearing some of these.

men vest pants solo

The shorts and the vest combination is really so cooool!  When I looked at these I immediately thought of Jason Mraz!  And honestly, a lot of these clothes would look so great on so many people.  And that’s what I like about this line of clothing, a lot of people can wear it.

  • Accessories

solo accessories

And just when you thought that the clothing line was all there was, they also have accessories to match the clothing!  Oh wow!  I can’t believe once again at just how unique and so fashionable these items are.  And they’re one-of-a-kind.  So many people, when they see you with any of the accessories will really take notice.

Here’s my favorite from this must-have limited special edition:
Solo Ladies Boyfriend Shirt

As I’ve said in my previous blog entries, I have a certain fondness with yellow apparel.  And upon browsing through the wonderful Larry Alcala Memorabilia Collection, I just had to pick the yellow Ladies’ Boyfriend Shirt (Php 1,795).  Coincidentally, this is their anti-smoking movement shirt which I super support.  Can’t wait to wear this soon!

You can also view the collection from Solo’s website & pick your own favorite Larry Alcala product! 🙂  Tell me which one you like!  Let’s exchange notes 😀

While we find time to go to Solo & buy our favorite item, why not join the Solo Online Model Search too?  Mechanics are actually simple.  Plus, you’ll get a chance to win Php20,000 in cash & Php15,000 in Solo gift certificates!

Nothing But H20

While I enjoyed most of the stores I visited in Robinsons Galleria specially because of their all-out clearance sale, my favorite would have to be Nothing But H20.  Why?  Plainly because I love the swimwear I bought, the headbands & the accessories!  I think we stayed there for like more than 15 minutes just trying stuff & buying things.

The shop is pleasing to the eye & you could easily spot the beautiful swimwear on display.  The ones that are displayed were all on sale, most at 50% off.  You can try them out to see if it fits you or if the design suits your taste.

It’s not just the swimsuits that made me so excited while I was at the store.  Their accessories are also simply top-notch!  I love their high quality headbands, I tried it on before I bought it.  Looks nice, wouldn’t you agree?  It’s only Php50+.

hairband nothing but h20

Last but definitely not the least, my eyes was set on their rings.  Yeah it’s not the typical silver/gold rings, it was just made with transparent strings but boy, does it look good.  It’s pretty cheap too at Php75 per piece.  Check them out, I’m proud to say that it was one of my best finds at the mall.

Robinsons Malls All-Out Clearance Sale

I’m not usually the type who goes out of my way and goes to the malls whenever they are on sale.  However, this particular event of Robinsons Malls was hard to pass up.  It’s Robinsons Malls Annual All-Out Clearance Sale this month of August!  Everyone will be enjoying discounts of up to 50% off.

I was pleasantly surprised when we were checking out the stores that some of them actually sell items that are at 70% off!  Coolness!  I actually spent so much that day, like way too much!  How can I resist items that are so worth buying?

galleria clearance sale

So we decided to go to Robinsons Galleria last Sunday.  One day is really not enough considering the vast number of stores in the mall.  From clothes, shoes, accessories, toys, gadgets, books & a lot more, they have something to offer for everyone (local & premium international brands).  Local stores are mostly on the 3rd floor while premium international brands can be found on the 2nd floor.  Take your pick & expect to forget about the time 😉

Here are the stores that caught my eye, you might wanna check them out too:

  • National Bookstore Bestsellers

NBS Bestsellers

One thing most people don’t know about me is that I love reading books!  I used to be so addicted that I would spend about 5-10k a year just to buy books at National Bookstore.  Now is the best time to buy since they are holding such a huge sale on all their books (except for magazines though).

Outside the store they have books displayed that are really cheap!  Would you believe New York bestseller books at less than a Php100?  What a great buy!  Don’t miss out on it!

Just when you thought that old titles would be the only items on sale, we got it all wrong!  Even new titles & top 10 best sellers for fiction & non-fiction are also being sold w/ discount.

national bookstore sale

One great find for me though is definitely their Lonely Planet Travel Guides.  I have been into travelling since last year & I have been buying a lot of Lonely Planet Guides.  It’s truly indispensable for me & I’m just glad that w/ Robinsons Malls’ All-Out Clearance Sale, NBS is actually offering it at 20% off!  I love it!

lonely planet books

You can distinguish how much discount an item is by the color of their sticker.  Black is for 10%, White for 20%, Green for 40%, Red for 50% & Yellow for 75%.  If you’re a bookworm, you’ll love it there.

  • Folded & Hung

folded and hung

Folded & Hung’s own version of Filipino shirts were the ones that caught my eye.  The shirts are designed nicely & cool colors available too!  They have red, blue, yellow, orange & green.  Of course I had to choose yellow as it’s the color of the country, now w/ P-Noy as our president.

folded and hung filipino shirt

2 types of discounts are being offered.  Either you buy one piece at Php494 (original price at Php 549) or you buy 1 at Php549 and get the 2nd item at 50% off.  It’s always nice to own a Filipino-themed shirt, we’re proud Filipinos, right? 🙂

  • Janylin

Janylin

I am able to resist buying a lot of things, but shoes will always be an exception!  If I’m to count the shoes I have at home, it most probably will be around 30-40 pairs.  As soon as I saw the word “Sale” in Janylin, I was really positive that I would be able to go out with a happy purchase.

janylin sale

Shoes at Php399, Php599, Php899 & Php1,299.  Pretty cheap for a prestigious brand such as Janylin.  There was one item that was a SUPER over to the max great buy!  Oh, I assure you, it’s well worth your Php1,299!  The boots shown below was originally priced at Php 2,295 & now they lowered the price!  I dare you to bring your cash or credit card to Janylin and grab that boots for sale.  It was a rare find!  I was actually raving about it all day.
