UNO Magazine lands in our Apple Mobile Gadgets

Isn’t it amazing that we are fast becoming a paperless society?  I welcome such a change and I’m glad UNO magazine is joining the bandwagon!  They have entered the Apple mobile platform through an application called PressReader.

Now, we can keep a soft copy of UNO magazine wherever we go, without much need of cabinet space, and not to mention, it’s also much much cheaper too!  I do know some people that would still prefer the paperback version of the magazine.  For someone like me who’s a technology addict, the mobile version is much more appreciated! 🙂

UNO magazine sells at Php190 while the PressReader version sells at US$0.99 per issue.  We can save almost Php150 just by downloading it through PressReader!  We get the same contents, literally!  The articles, photos, even the ads are in the online version!  100% scanned page by page.

Plus, the fact that PressReader is easy to use.  PressReader runs on iPhones (which I have and is used for this review), iPod Touch & iPads!  iPad I believe is the best gadget to view UNO magazine but my ever-reliable iPhone is good enough for me.

We can read the contents in normal mode or in landscape mode.  We can zoom and scroll as we want to.  We can flip the screen just like how we read conventional magazines and we can stare at those awesome high-resolution photos as long as we want to! hehehe!  It’s UNO magazine, they have awesome photos, features and stuff!

If you’re tired of using your fingers to zoom, scroll, flip, you can make use of the text version of PressReader.  Less effort, more time to read just not in the same format as how the magazine put it though.  In order to do this, you click on the highlighted title of the article and you’ll be brought to the text version.

No more flipping & zooming.  All you need to do is read from top to bottom.  BUT there’s more!!  You can actually have the application read the article for you.  Just click the headset image at the bottom and you can listen and rest your eyes.  Can the traditional UNO magazine do that?  No! hehehe!  That’s why I really prefer this over the usual Php190 paperback version 🙂

So far, there are 3 issues of UNO Magazine in PressReader.  September, October and the recent November 2010 issue featuring Ramon Bautista & Paloma.  I’ll definitely get the next issue too and the next one after that, and the rest of the future issues definitely :p

Not to mention, you get 7 free issues upon download of PressReader.  I’ve used one up for UNO’s November issue and used the other one for an Inquirer issue.  For my 5 remaining free issues, I’ll make sure I use it solely for UNO Magazine’s future issues.

Kudos, UNO Magazine for embracing technology!  I hope other magazines follow suit too 🙂

Canon Collector Cup

Wow!!  I finally got myself a Canon Collector Cup and it wasn’t expected at all.  I knew there were products that look like lenses and I’ve always known that they are expensive.  This particular Canon Collector Cup is worth 25 U.S. Dollars.  I’ve always wanted to have one but with the price tag, I always chickened out.

To my surprise, when the hosts announced the 3rd theme during the 2010 Canon Photomarathon, they said we’ll also be receiving a special gift from Canon.   I actually thought it would just be ID laces or key chains but when I got to the download counter, I was smiling blissfully when I saw what the item was.

I finally found a tumbler to use when I’m at the office, Yay!!  I’m pretty sure that in our floor, I’m the only one who has this.  I first tried the Canon Collector Cup yesterday at home.  My mom put fresh orange juice there.  When I drank the juice, I was in heaven!  I wonder if it’s really psychological huh?  Knowing that I love the tumbler made me love orange juice more than usual 😛

I love the design!  They really did their homework, making it look like the true Canon lens and also making it useful as a tumbler.  The top cover actually reminds me of the sports tumblers in the market.  We just open the small lid to drink and close when unused.  It’s not spill-proof but I believe it does its job.

It’s also important to note that we cannot do the ff.:

  • microwave the collector cup.
  • use carbonated beverages.
  • give to children when filled with hot liquids.
  • overfill.
  • freeze.
  • use cleaners containing bleach or chlorine.

Can you distinguish which one is genuine?

Having the Canon Collector Cup made me forget all the stress & tiredness from Canon Photomarathon.  It was a 13-hour event, only a few will be rewarded greatly.  I felt that I got a consolation prize from the tumbler.  I’m greatly satisfied, it was an awesome souvenir!  Thanks again Canon! 😀

2010 Canon Photomarathon Philippines

Canon Photomarathon

I was lucky enough to be one of 1,000 participants in the Canon Photomarathon 2010 held last saturday, November 6.  I was supposed to join last year but I got sick so I was glad that this time around, I was able to finally experience it!

This year’s Canon Photomarathon was held at SMX convention center.  We were asked to register before 8AM and I arrived 10 minutes before that, whew!  I was expecting a long queue but was pleasantly surprised that it was organized.  They had a lot of registration booths arranged alphabetically by participants’ surname.

I immediately texted fellow blogger Jepoy to ask where they were.  I wanted to at least be in the company of friends than be alone at  a whole day event.  I truly appreciated their company!

The Canon Photomarathon was a huge event!  I never thought that it would be that prestigious.  During the program, they even had dance numbers aside from the normal announcement of mechanics & contest winners.

To my surprise, several Miss Earth Philippines winners were also there to grace the event.

I haven’t attended a marathon in my life because I can only endure a 10km run! hahaha!  Anyhow, this photomarathon is a great concept.  It’s great that I was able to experience it.  I did my best but I know I can do better next time now that I have an idea on how it works.

Basically, the goal is to be able to capture the best picture from among all the participating photographers.  Of course, using only Canon cameras 🙂  An on-the-spot photography contest wherein we were given 3 different themes.  With each theme, there was a time limit of 2 hours to shoot and 30minutes to download.

We can go out of SMX Convention Center and basically as far as possible as we wanted to go BUT as long as we were back at the download stations on time.

During the 1st theme, we actually tried to go out of MOA, but I guess with time-constraints, we just had to stay in the venue for the rest of the event.

As you can see in the picture below I was really excited to start shooting 😛  I was hoping to win as I need a new DSLR.

So here are the themes, I also included the pictures I submitted.  I wasn’t impressed with my 1st 2 submissions but I was pretty confident and happy with my 3rd one.  I guess it wasn’t good enough because I didn’t win.  I’ll make sure I study photography before the 2011 run.  Ehem, ehem 😀

  • Theme # 1: Deep and wide, peaks and valleys go inside or outside, all the place you know near or far.

canon photomarathon theme 1

For this theme, I really didn’t have a clue as to what to do.  But then I got to thinking, maybe I should shoot some McDonald’s french fries because the container is deep and well, it can be wide.  The fries itself can represent peaks, and when it’s gone, there goes your valley hahaha :p  But then I didn’t like the pictures that I took, so I ended up thinking of something else.  What I had in mind next were pictures of stairs because those two can be wide and depending on the steps can be deep as well.  I wasn’t so sure about the peaks and valleys with the stairs, but I got to thinking that maybe it also applied.  However, I also didn’t like the outcome of the pictures.  So, with little time left, I took a look at the escalators in MOA, and decided that it would be my best shot.  And that is the shot that I ended up submitting for the first theme.

  • Theme # 2: Big or small, we come in different sizes, short or tall, we grow in spurts and phases round and round the circle of life goes when we stop, only God knows.

2nd theme submission canon photomarathon

My friend Fritz wasn’t able to come to the Photomarathon, and I was hoping that he would come too.  He’s a great photographer, but knowing that he couldn’t come and also accompany me, he did the next best thing, and helped me out through the day.  Especially with theme 2, he suggested that I take a picture of a construction site in an angle that incorporated loose materials, finished parts of some phases, a foreman with plans, constructions workers, then in a manner that layered each of those parts.  It was a great idea!  I knew that others would go for the usual plants, or kids, or even animals, but I was sure that this idea would really stand out.  I had seen a great construction site just outside of SMX, and it was actually perfect because it had all of the components needed for that perfect shot.  However, the guard would not let me in and take any shots.  And so with time ticking, I decided to look around for other construction sites.  The photo below is the one that I submitted for theme 2. It wasn’t the ideal concept photo, but I really believe it stood out in the sea of photos submitted for this particular theme.

  • Theme # 3: Happy, mad – sometimes we feel the blues, angry, glad – our moods are changing hues, up and down our lows and highs, we close our eyes and then… surprise!

canon theme 3 submission photomarathon

So, for this theme I knew that the main subject were going to be people with all their emotions, smiles, and faces.  We decided to just go around MOA and take pictures of people that were walking by or just sitting around.  With a bit more time, we ended up outside facing Manila Bay.  There were a few people that we took pictures of, and even a few strangers that were willing to be our subjects, but their actions just weren’t natural.  It was a great sight to finally encounter the couple that ended up gracing my final submission.  It was perfect, and I’m really proud with the following pictures.  It truly captures the theme, in my opinion, because no matter how many shots I took of this couple, they were just so immersed with each other as if there were no one else in this world but them.  Truly in love.  And when you’re in love, you are able to feel so many emotions, sometimes all at once.  It’s the one shot that I really felt would give me the best chance at winning.

It was almost 8pm and we were too tired but excited to know who would win the 2010 Canon Photomarathon.  The judges must have had such a hard time choosing over 3,000 photos.  The Canon brand ambassadors themselves were the judges!  At least they were able to see 3 of my works.  It wasn’t enough to impress them but I’ll make sure I’d do better next time 😛

3 winners were lucky enough to win Canon DSLRs.  I was really drooling while I viewed the prize display near the stage.  I was literally imagining myself holding at least one of them hahaha!  It was wishful thinking.  Congratulations to the winners though.  Ironically, the grand prize winner wasn’t present anymore during the awarding, he won a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and a LOT of accessories.

All 1,000+ participants I’m sure did enjoy the event because I surely did!  I’m already including Canon Photomarathon as one of the activities I won’t miss every year.  Thanks Canon! 🙂

Wireless Modem Huawei E585 Review

I’m finally ready to review my newest gadget!  It’s called Huawei E585 and it’s a wireless modem or more popularly called Mi-Fi (mobile wifi).  I decided to buy it because I wanted to be connected 24/7.  This was the best way I could think of.  I cannot use a USB dongle as it can only connect to one device.  I have lots of gadgets (2 iPhones, Laptop & PSP) and I just had to find an affordable & more efficient way to be connected to the world wide web.

So what does it do?  It’s basically a modem that is mobile!  We can practically bring it anywhere we go considering the small size, it’s really convenient! 😀  We can connect 5 different devices via Wi-Fi and 1 extra slot for a USB-ready device.

When I got the package, I was so excited!  After 2-3 weeks of use, it was just yesterday that I took off the plastic cover.  Addict much?  Yeah, definitely!  You can bully me now hahaha!

So how does Huawei E585 work?  In my case, I subscribed to a wireless broadband account via Sun Cellular (Php799 monthly fee), got the SIM only option.  I just inserted the SIM into the Mi-Fi and we’re good to go.

When I bought this device (Php 7,400), it was already unlocked, all 3 Philippine cellular network settings were already imbedded in Huawei E585.  Convenient for me, good customer service as we say.  If you’re curious, I bought it from one of the sellers over at Philmug forums.

For your information, we can change the settings of our Huawei E585 through their homepage.  When you connect it to your laptop, open your web browser, type http://192.168.1.1.  You’ll see a very user-friendly profile page as pictured below:

Log in and go to advanced settings.

mifi screenshot 3

You can then click connection settings to input the ones that is applicable to you.  For Philippines-based users, here are some vital information that can help you set your 3G account:

  • Sun Broadband (Post-paid)

APN (static): fbband
Authentication: PAP
IP address: dynamic

  • Sun Broadband (Pre-paid)

APN (static): minternet

  • Smart Bro

APN (static): smartbro (if using a smartbro simcard) or internet (if using a regular prepaid simcard)

After you finished entering the different connection profiles, you can then go back to advance settings.  Click Wi-Fi settings and choose your desired profile to use.  As for me, my chosen profile is the sun postpaid.  I changed my SSID to “Roch Sun Broadband” for easy identification 😛  I also put an ecryption where a person will need to put the right password in order to use the Wi-Fi connection.

I love the look of this cute gadget.  The best thing is you’ll see all the important information in the screen such as signal strength, actual battery status, kind of data connection, # of wifi devices connected to the unit & connection time.

huawei e585 features

I truly find Huawei E585 useful and I’m just glad I bought it.  Considering where we were just a few years ago, it’s still amazing to me where we are now in terms of connectivity.  And it doesn’t get as cool as having a mobile wifi connection, and being connected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and connecting multiple gadgets using only one such handy device.

Perfect Timing

Perfect Timing” is the recipe of many a great picture.  In a Sports magazine, the picture of a footballer suspended in mid air perfectly poised to grab the ball makes me marvel at the perfect timing of the photographer.  The good news is lesser mortals like us can use a simple technique and achieve similar results.  Let me now share the secret how.

The technique is so simple, even a beginner can do it.  All you need is a good point and shoot or better still, an SLR camera.  I call it the “gun spraying” technique.  Because it is very much like spraying bullets from an AK-47.  A spray of bullets maximizes the chances of one of the bullets hitting the bulls eye.  Using a camera, you can do something exactly similar using “Continuous shooting” mode.

Here Is how:

  1. First, set the camera in “Continuous shooting mode”.  (Check your camera manual to find the button for continuous shooting more. In canon, it looks like multiple overlaid rectangles) .
  2. Now, just fire away by keeping your finger pressed on the shutter button. The camera will keep firing away at rapid succession as long as you press the shutter button. As an example, if you want to capture the footballer in mid air, aim just before he takes the leap. Keep your finger pressed on the shutter all the way through his leap. You will get multiple pictures in different positions. Of the several shots, pick and chose the one that was “perfectly timed”.  Remember to use high shutter speed ( 1/500th of a second or more ) so that you freeze the motion of a fast moving target.  That was easy, wasn’t it?

Do all cameras have “continuous shooting mode” feature?  The higher end point and shoots and all SLR cameras do.  Obviously, the more the advanced the camera, the faster it gets.  When I got my first SLR, the most noticeable difference was how fast I could shoot using the SLR compared to my good old point and shoot.

Here are some situations where I use the “gun spray” technique to maximum effect.  Sports and action photography are obvious choices where perfect timing is so important to capture that defining moment.  Another situation where it is very helpful is capturing the expressions on faces of people. Particularly, the million dollar smile on your baby’s face.  Here is one of my favorite shots that I captured at a Dolphin show.

My friends saw this and thought I was a genius.  Now that the secret is out, we know it doesn’t take a genius to achieve perfect timing.
