Mac: View Hidden Files in Finder

How do I view the hidden files and folders in Finder?

Finder is the files explorer for the Mac OS.

This is what I learned and would like to share with you.

  • Open Terminal
You can find this by clicking Finder -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal

  • To see all hidden files, type the ff. in Terminal
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
  • That’s it! You’ll be able to see all your system files.
  • If you want to revert back to before.. See step # 5
  • To hide all system files, type the ff. in Terminal
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder

Mac: How to Install Windows OS on your MacBook

It was kind of challenging for me to install windows vista in my macbook. Basically because I got some errors and I have to do a lot of research before I finally made it to work. To help you save time, I’ll post here what I did and how it worked 😉

  • Get ready with your Mac OS & Windows installers.
  • On your mac, close all open programs.
  • Go to Applications then Utilities then Boot Camp.
  • Open Bootcamp Assistant, follow the online instructions
  • Create a partition for Windows, I chose 40GB for my windows HD (I have a 250GB HD)
I got this error when I clicked partition (Your disk cannot be partitioned because verification failed)

I tried going to disk utility then repair then tried boot camp again but it failed again.

After googling, I found the solution:
1) Start up your macbook w/ the Mac OS X installer CD
2) Use Disk Utility to repair disk

This time, it worked! No more errors, so I continued w/ Windows installation.

  • Insert your Windows Installer CD then click Start Installation. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Select “Disk 0 Partition 3 BOOTCAMP”
  • Click Drive Options (advanced).
  • Click Format, then OK, then next. Your Windows Vista partition is now formatted using NTFS file system.
  • After you install Windows, your computer will automatically restart using Windows.
  • Follow onscreen instructions to configure windows.
  • When you’ve finished installing Windows, you’ll need to install the macbook drivers.
  • Go to My Computer, select Drive D: then eject (windows installation CD)
  • Insert Mac OS X Installation disc, follow the onscreen instructions.
  • You’re done! woohooo!

In order for you to choose which OS to boot, hold down the option key while restarting until the disk icons appear and choose which OS to start, that’s it!

My Mac Gears (Part 3 – Bags)

Now you know what kind of gears I have. Now I’m going to share with you the bags that I have to carry them.

Here they are:

  • Crumpler McBain Lovechild

I fell in love with this bag even before it was available here in the Philippines

Crumpler Bags are the coolest bags created, period.

I got this as a gift from a friend way back 2003. It was supposed to be my bag for the iBook. Since now, I’m using a 13.3” macbook, I can’t use this bag for the same purpose. My office laptop is a 15” HP laptop so I can’t use it also.

Anyway, I love this bag because it really protects your laptop as well as it looks so cool! Everyone just kept asking me where I bought the bag. 🙂

This bag is in display with my other laptop bags. And I’ll definitely find some way to make this useful again.

  • Crumpler Salary Sacrifice

Since I already have a messenger bag, I decided to just get a laptop bag for my macbook. Though, I really really love the color red, I got myself a brown one.

This bag is quite heavy in my opinion and I ended up using it rarely. I still do like it though, I guess because it’s crumpler.

I bought this bag mainly because my macbook 13.3” fits it. The McBain only fits 12” laptops.

This bag is spacious you can put pens/papers/folders, your wallet, essentials, etc.

Here’s a picture of the back of the bag:

  • Crumpler Dreadful Embarassment

I got this bag because I felt that the backpack is too heavy for me. I decided to go back to shoulder bag heehhe.

This bag is still too big though and I felt like a small person with a big big bag ehehehe.

It’s very spacious though and you will be able to put even 2 laptops! I tried it, I put my office laptop plus my macbook and there’s still space for notebooks and other stuffs.

Pretty good bag for those people who carry a lot of things 🙂

I think I have enough laptop bags already hehehee… I will not get any more of those for a long time..

My Mac Gears (Part 2 – Accessories)

Just to continue on… I protect my mac with available accessories in the market.

I have chosen the ff.:

  • iSkin

I remember I bought this at 900 pesos somewhere but I don’t remember where 😛 But I knew the original price was 1800 pesos.

This is a must-have especially if you’re using a macbook white. Dirt gets easily noticed and it doesn’t look good if we see a very dirty keyboard right? feels eeky!

iSkin covers almost every part of the keyboard areas including mouse click button and palm rest.

This accessory is also easy to clean, you’ll just need soap and water. After you clean it, you just dry it out and use again.

Simple, useful and a great great accessory for your macbook.

Made by iSkin.

  • Radtech Sleevz

This Sleevz protects the exterior finish of our macbook from bumps, etc.

It fits your macbook perfectly like a glove. Magic? 🙂

Anyway, I really love this. I protect my macbook with this accessory then I put them in my laptop bag. It made me feel secure that my macbook is protected.

This is made by Radtech.

Here are some of the features identified by Radtech

  • Superlight, form-fitting protective sleeve provides elegant and stylish protection
  • Made from RadTech’s exclusive Optex fabric. Clean and polish computer’s case and display screen
  • Patent pending one-piece design offers incredible strength and completely flat seams
  • Models now available for Axiotron ModBook – expertly clean ModBook display anytime
  • Offers significant protection – Sleeved notebooks have survived incredible perils

  • Fits your notebook like a glove – exquisitely tailored to hug every curve
  • Great for protecting your lap and funiture from hot notebook bottoms
  • Fully breathable, yet repels liquids, spills and debris
  • Washable, and naturally resists soiling and staining
  • Greatly enhances your grip while carrying
  • Available in 6 exciting colors to suit any style

Overall, they both served their purpose. I’m still using them 🙂

On my next post, I’ll share the different laptop bags that I have to protect my laptops.

My Mac Gears (Part 1 – Main)

I love mac… and yes, I’m not a windows fan… I idolize Steve Jobs and I love all Apple products.
I’ll be dividing this post into 3: Main Gear, Accessories & Laptop Bags.

Here are my main mac gears:

  • Macbook (I bought this to replace my iBook)
I’ve finally decided to upgrade my iBook last year. The major reason why I did it is because of Bootcamp.

With bootcamp, I can also run windows on my mac! how cool is that? 🙂

It’s just nice to have the best of both worlds. Having both windows os and mac os in a single machine. Only mac can do this!!! 🙂

Though I haven’t been using the windows os on my macbook, i really don’t care about it coz i love Mac OS X!!! but anyhow, the thought of being able to access it on the machine if i need it is already a good enough reason for me.

After 1 year, I decided to upgrade my Hard drive and memory. Upgraded my Hard drive from 80GB to 250GB and memory from 1GB to 2GB.

At the same time, I also upgraded my Mac OS X to Leopard!!! 😀

Just to give you a little history, Macbook was launched 1 month after Macbook Pro was launched. Here is a keynote of the 2006 macworld conference by Steve Jobs for Macbook Pro.

  • Airport Extreme

I already had a wifi router before (linksys) but I decided to switch to airport extreme just because of 2 reasons:
1)It’s made my Apple.
2)It looks prettier.

I know the reasons are not even important. But it gave me happiness and it made me feel proud that I own this gadget 🙂

It does what it promises

-It lets you turn your external drive into a drive where you can share with all the users in your network

-It is extremely easy to setup.

-It also lets you access to a wireless printer. All you have to do is connect your printer into the airport extreme.

I bought this October 2007 and until now, I’m very happy. I might upgrade to a Time Capsule though as I need more space for my hard drive. Let’s see…

  • Apple Mighty Mouse

What I love most about this mouse is the design. It looks so neat and so unique.

It’s not like the normal mouse wherein you’ll see a scroll button and 2 other buttons.

In here, it’s invisible but you can click on it. And it does serve the same purpose. It’s just expensive though.

When I was deciding which mouse to buy, I was thinking of design/cool factor/high price versus normal/cheap. I decided to go for the design and cool factor 😛

I’m still using this until now. I bought this last 2004.
