Stanley Chi’s Book: Suplado Tips 2

Stanley Chi’s Book: Suplado Tips 2

Well, what can I say?  Stanley Chi’s Suplado Tips has gone a long way.  In just a few months after Suplado Tips book was launched, UniSilver Time came out with a watch that was inspired by the book.  Both the book and the watches are a huge successes.  So it wasn’t a big surprise when Stanley sent me his latest book, Suplado Tips 2, which is the second installation of Suplado Tips.

Stanley Chi Suplado

In less than a year, Stanley Chi already came up with the second book!  Wow!  Congrats Stan!  I guess people find it entertaining enough learning and practicing the different suplado tips that Stan has shared in his first book.  Maybe, they got themselves ladies chasing after them because they gained confidence by being a suplado?  Well, there’s one thing I know for sure.  Stanley has his own suplada girl!

Now, how timely is that the Suplado Tips 2 book is launching this love month!  The suplado guys need more pointers and they should be more fierce than the ones shared in the first installment of the book.  Well, I’m sure the second book will be able to satisfy their need.  I read the book – Suplado Tips 2 and I must say, Stanley Chi has definitely leveled up!  The tips shared are more ‘suplado-er’.  If I’m a guy, I will have second thoughts using those tips.  Maybe, just maybe, true suplado guys are the ones who can actually pull those off!

Here are some of the Suplado Tips shared on the book sequel:

Suplado Tips 2

What I like about the Suplado Tips 2 is that aside from the usual suplado tips, Stan has added tons of stuff.  Stuff like comic strips, slum book, photographs, tips from the fans, suplado/suplada stories and the funniest or cutest of them all is the Suplado Society of the Philippines I.D.! hahahaha!

So you wanna level up your being suplado?  Then head on over to Fully Booked and National Bookstore outlets nationwide to get your copy of Stanley Chi’s newest book, Suplado Tips 2 (Php 95).  You can also get the book online through PSICOM Publishing.

Marriott Manila Introduces Newly-Revamped Sunday Brunch

Marriott Manila Sunday Brunch

I rarely go to Pasay area as I live far away so when I got an invite to try out the newly revamped sunday brunch of Marriott Hotel, I had to decline it.  However, I don’t know what struck me but I decided to just go anyway.  Why would I miss the chance to try out Marriot Hotel’s very own food buffet?  I had to try it out!  Forget about driving far if an enormous amount of good food is waiting for me!

Call time was at 11AM.  I arrived 11:30AM and saw several bloggers already enjoying their food.  As much as I wanted to dive in and eat already, I wanted to take pictures first so that I can share my experience with you.  I went around Marriott Cafe and noticed the beautiful ambiance of the place.  Marriott Cafe has awesome design!  It was bright, classy and huge!!!

marriott cafe ambiance

I was glad I saw Yedy (one of my favorite bloggers).  I sat beside her and chatted away while we enjoyed the food at Marriott Cafe.

Mcafe roch and yedy

We, of course, chose to sit beside the juice section!  hahaha!  Talk about right positioning.  Hotels usually don’t offer unlimited juices in their food buffet so I was pleasantly surprised that Marriott Cafe included them.  M Cafe (another name for Marriott Cafe) has 2 juice stations and each station has a type of iced tea and milk shake!

marriott drinks

Bloody Mary Bar

Our enjoyment that we sat beside the juice station was quickly overshadowed when we found the new Martini Bar!!!  Oh my gosh, this is heaven for people who love cocktails and alcohol!  Well, yeah, noontime might not be a good time to drink alcohol but boy, this martini bar was a huge hit among the guests that day.

marriott cafe martini bar

The Martini bar was set up where guests can have their personalized Bloody Mary shaken.  I, however, asked for orange juice (I don’t drink alcohol :P).

Here’s what we can expect there:

  • Vodka
  • Tomatoes
  • Worcestershire Sauce, Piri Piri sauce, Tabasco red
  • Celery, Olive, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, lemon juice, celery salt

Small lobster, Tiger prawns, Extra large New Zealand mussels, Blue crab, Three kinds of Aioli, Cocktail sauce, Thai seafood sauce, Mango salsa

Carvery

Everyone’s favorite in hotel buffet is the carving counter where we can find lambs, prime ribs and some lechon.  I, however, skipped this as I was eyeing the steaks at the CRU Steak House (you’ll know about it as you read this post).

Antonio’s

MCafe’s pasta section is a unique one!  I heard the menu changes every week so there’s always something new to look forward to.  The day that I was there, we had 3 pastas to choose from: spinach gnocchi, salmon ravioli and pumpkin tortellini.  I’ve chosen spinach gnocchi and asked the chef to use tomato-based sauce.  I loved that the chef didn’t put too much on my plate.  I guess she knew that I had so much to eat that day 😛

CRU Steak House

There were 2 sections in Marriott Cafe sunday brunch that I couldn’t forget.  One was the CRU Steak House which is a different place altogether.  It has its own dining area.  I guess if you want to have a more private dining experience then you might opt to sit in the CRU Steak House.

marriott cafe ambiance 2

Steaks, steaks and steaks!  I wouldn’t miss it for the world!  The sunday brunch price of Php 2,000 is super worth it even by just eating the steaks at CRU Steak House.  It is important to note that Marriott Manila only features grass-fed Angus beef from Australia, how awesome!

My biggest surprise was the Foie Gras!  Yes, there’s foie gras!  My gosh!  I had to get one serving of it to come with the steak that I ordered.  It was pure heaven when I ate it.  I knew right there and then that I will be back at Marriott Manila for their sunday brunch.  The far distance won’t be an issue for me anymore considering the food that I’d be enjoying.  Next time, no more pictures, I’ll just enjoy my dining experience 🙂

Dessert

Last, but definitely not the least is the dessert.  They have the usual ice cream and yogurt with condiments to boot.  BUT, the MUST-VISIT at Marriot Cafe is their Chocolate Room!

marriott dessert

Chocolate Room

Every single person in the planet LOVES chocolates!  I may be an exception as I only eat white chocolates but this new offering by Marriott Manila is a clear foodie pleaser!

Imagine a room full of chocolates!  Right at the center of the room is the chocolate fondue with condiments like fruits, marshmallows, etc.

marriott chocolate fondue

On the side is a wide selection of chocolate cakes.  I actually took a moment to admire the beautiful, cute and lovely designs of each cake.  There were raspberry ganache pound cake, milk chocolate mouse with caramel gelee, and Maracaibo chocolate cheesecake, chocolate croustillant, apple chocolate gianduja, white chocolate panna cotta with raspberry, and triple chocolate mouse.

marriott chocolate cakes

I took a big bar of white chocolate.  Do you know that those big bars are 100% Belgian chocolate?  Enjoy unlimited servings of rocky road, almond chocolate, nuts and fruit chocolate.  We were all in chocolate heaven in the chocolate room.  I think I entered the room more than 10 times that sunday.  I couldn’t help it!

marriott chocolate 2

There’s also white chocolate chip brownies, manjari chocolate bar, chocolate pecan tart, macaroon chocolate gianduja, chocolate nougat, chocolate heart bon bon, and chocolate truffles.  So many to choose from!!

marriott chocolate 1

I was completely shocked when I saw the chocolate chef!!  My first reaction was why did Marriott Manila have to put a person and bathe them with chocolates?  When I got to talk to the chocolate chef, she told me that she actually enjoyed it.  She said it was like getting a chocolate spa.  I guess I have to take her word for it!  Boy, she definitely got all our attention.  Everyone wanted to have a photo op with the chocolate chef.  Well, she has to be there to welcome all of us to chocolate heaven.  What an unforgettable experience!

chocolate statue

I might have shared so many sections of the sunday brunch at the Marriott Cafe but in actuality, I missed some of the sections like the Yakitori, sashimi & wicked rolls and the tandoor.  Imagine how big the sunday brunch is!  You’ll never run out of food.  The only issue you’ll have is the limitation that your body can take.  I wish our stomach have unlimited storage too!

I guess Marriott Manila decided to offer it as brunch as with the amount of food that they’re offering.  It’s not possible for us to take all those food in if we already had our breakfast.  The sunday brunch is available at Marriott Cafe every sundays from 11:30AM to 3PM at Php 2,000 per person.

mcafe

But wait, there’s entertainment too as Mr. Clown roams around Marriott Cafe joking around with guests.  I enjoyed my few minutes with him taking pictures.  He was such a lively, hyperactive clown, hahaha!

Queso de Bola Cheesecake from Indulgence by Irene

Queso de Bola Cheesecake from Indulgence by Irene

We usually hear of Queso de Bola during Christmas.  I, however, with so many bloggers in my Facebook timeline, have been hearing about Queso de Bola Cheesecake.  Yes, a cheesecake made of Queso de Bola!

I was curious but didn’t know where to get one.  As I read more and more bloggers (especially the food club) rave about the queso de bola cheesecake, I found out that it’s actually a creation of Irene.  Irene is the wife of Richard, owner of Tales from the Tummy blog.  Apparently, Irene bakes!

I was ecstatic when Richard brought a 4.5-inch solo-size queso de bola cheesecake for me to try out.  Just by the looks of it, I already felt that the cake must taste good.

Queso de Bola Cheesecake by Indulgence by Irene

Since I got the Queso de Bola cheesecake at night time, I put it on the refrigerator for me to bring to work the next day.  You see, I always get hungry especially when I’m at work.  I was truly excited that day as I can finally try out what everyone was raving for!

I invited a colleague of mine to try out Irene’s Queso de Bola Cheesecake with me.  We got our forks out and used it to enjoy the very cheesy cheesecake.

queso de bola cheesecake

I must say after I finished half the mini cheesecake, I was completely satisfied.  The bloggers were right!  The Queso de Bola Cheesecake is really delicious!  No wonder Irene finally made it into a business and she called it Indulgence by Irene.  Her first product?  No other than the fast-rising Queso de Bola Cheesecake.

Irene's Queso de Bola Cheesecake

I appreciate that Indulgence by Irene created such high-quality cake.  Imagine a cheesecake that you can truly say CHEESE!  If you love cheese (especially if you love edam cheese), then this is for you.  There weren’t any fillers at all.  You know that every bite of the cake has pure goodness of edam cheese.  A type of cheese that most people prefer!

After finishing the cheesecake, both me and my colleague were too full! hahaha!  Actually, I had a very light dinner as our merienda was full of honest to goodness queso de bola yumminess!  Just a few bites of Irene’s Queso de Bola can make your stomach satisfied and full.  I’m definitely a happy camper and I’m just glad that my first try of a Queso de Bola Cheesecake was the one created from Indulgence by Irene.

Indulgence by Irene

Irene’s Queso de Bola Cheesecake comes in 2 sizes.  The 4.5-inch one which I reviewed in this post costs about Php200 while a family-size one which is 9-inch costs Php 900.

I wonder what the next product of Indulgence by Irene is… I’m looking forward to it.  For now, I know that Irene is busy baking her Queso de Bola Cheesecakes as orders kept coming in.  Congratulations Irene and Richard! 🙂

Squalene – The Oxygen Supplement

Squalene - the Oxygen Supplement

Ever since I got hospitalized last December, I’ve been a bit more conscious of my health.  I can’t get it out of my head how my immunologist told me that I had to take vitamins or supplements so I could get all the nutrients I needed.

I’ve been taking vitamins religiously since then, and supplements of course, most especially Squalene.  Do you remember what that is?  Squalene became a household name a couple of decades back.  And it is a testament to its efficacy that it is still has very strong name recall.  My mom used to require me to take Squalene everyday while I was small.

What is Squalene?

Squalene

Squalene is a natural organic compound obtained from shark liver oil.  Shark liver oil has isoprenoids which have powerful antioxidant functions essential for wellness.  We always have this belief that we need to take supplements in order to get the right vitamins but we tend to forget that we need antioxidants in our body.  By helping control the level of harmful free radicals in our bodies, the antioxidant isoprenoids in Squalene boosts our immune systems and may have some role in protecting us from cancer.

We are all born with Squalene in our body.  However, as we grow older and are exposed ourselves to higher and higher levels of pollution, our natural store of Squalene is gradually depleted.  Thus, our ability to combat free radicals also decreases.  Taking a supplement like Issho Genki replenishes Squalene levels and keeps us well-protected against free radicals.  As a great bonus, taking Squalene improves the uptake of oxygen in the cells of our bodies resulting in healthier, more supple skin, increased stamina and energy.

squalene oxygen supplement

Issho Genki Squalene is being sold per box with 100 capsules (450 mg/capsule) inside.  Recommended dosage is 2-4 capsules daily.  I, however, take it twice a day.

Celebrate the Year of the Water Dragon at New World Hotel’s Jasmine Restaurant

Start the Year of the Water Dragon at New World Hotel's Jasmine Restaurant

Happy Chinese New Year everyone!

How timely is my post today as I share with you yummy Cantonese dishes being served at Jasmine Restaurant located at the New World Hotel.  It’s a nice second visit for me and I was uber excited when I stopped by the Cantonese restaurant for dinner.

RSC_2295

If you remember my post sometime last year, Jasmine had brought two chefs over from Shanghai for their Shanghai Surprise promo.  This time around, I was able to try out their a la carte dishes that are made by Jasmine’s very own Chef Choi Wingki.

Jasmine Restaurant Chef Choi

Oh and, yeah.  There’s a surprise by the end of this post (related to Chinese New Year feast!).  But before the exciting news, here are the a la carte dishes we tried out at Jasmine Restaurant, New World Hotel.

  • Fresh Fruit Juices

Jasmine Fresh Fruit Juices

I was second to arrive at the venue so while waiting for the other bloggers to arrive, I ordered cantaloupe shake while Yedy got watermelon shake.  I always go for fresh fruit juices or shakes.  It’s always nice to drink healthy refreshments.

  • Boiled Peanuts

Jasmine Boiled Peanuts

We got ourselves munching on boiled peanuts which are now my favorite snack.

  • Pork Siomai

Jasmine Siomai

It pays to be early as I got to eat more food especially dim sum like pork siomai.  Our plain old Chinese dim sum favorite.

  • Har Gow

Jasmine hakaw

Har Gow, however, wins over pork siomai.  As soon as the har gow came out, I totally forgot about pork siomai (although it’s tradition to serve har gow and siomai together).

Do you know that this dish is said to be the one that people judge the skill of a dim sum chef on?  Well, since this was obviously a hit early on during dinner, then there was no doubt that the chef was pretty successful and super skilled 🙂

Har Gow is a chinese dumpling that has shrimps, pork fat, bamboo shoots, scallions, cornstarch, sesame oil, sugar and soy sauce inside.

  • Steamed Gizzard

Jasmine appetizer

Gizzards, like liver, I’m not really fond of.  So I wasn’t able to try this dish.  However, for gizzard lovers out there, Jasmine has it. 🙂

  • Wagyu Beef with Mango Roll

Jasmine Wagyu roll

When this dish, wagyu beef with mango roll, was served in our table.  Everyone of us (who coincidentally were at Jasmine’s last year for their Shanghai Surprise) exclaimed, “Yay!”.  It was our favorite dish and we’re glad Jasmine added it permanently to their menu.

It has the same honest to goodness taste of wagyu cooked with mango and wrapped in a roll.  I can eat this over and over!

  • Shrimp Mousse with Vegetarian Sauce

jasmine balls

To make things simpler, I’ll call this shrimp balls.  But wait, they are not your ordinary shrimp balls!  They were made from real shrimps and cooked in Jasmine’s special vegetarian sauce.  Not too sweet, not too salty, just the right amount of flavors.  I love it!

  • Deep-fried Oysters

Jasmine oysters

How many times have I said that I don’t like oysters in this blog?  I lost count!  However, I have grown to love it as restaurants was able to cook oysters in such a way that it removes the after-taste that I used to dislike.

I usually have baked oysters.  Imagine my surprise when I tried out Jasmine’s deep-fried oysters.  Suffice to say, I was totally blown away!  It was one of my favorites at the dinner!  I think it was the garlic and some other secret ingredient that they put in that made the dish a success!  I couldn’t stop getting more servings of the dish.

  • Beef with XO Sauce

Jasmine Beef

Others might think that XO sauce is a liquor sauce.  In all actuality, it’s a seafood sauce that is mainly used by Chinese chefs as condiments in cooking.  Like in this case, Jasmine used XO sauce to cook the beef with.  The result is a nice delicious dish.  What I liked most is the tenderness of the beef.  I’m always wary of meat that is chewy and I’m glad that Chef Choi got the right formula for this! 🙂

  • Steamed Live Garoupa with Soy Sauce

Jasmine Fish

In every Chinese meal, there’s either the steamed fish or crabs.  This time around we had steamed fish.  A simple recipe but yummy nevertheless.

  • Pan-fried Chinese New Year Cake & Sesame Seed Balls

Jasmine Dessert

For dessert, we had sesame seed balls and tikoy (fried new year cake).  It’s the chinese new year and everyone is in celebration mode so it’s nice to have ended the meal with the accustomed Chinese New year delicacy.

And with that, I share with you the highlight of the night:

Ultimate Eighteen Treasures Feast on Wood Basin

A Chinese New Year custom for most tsinoys is to have a big reunion with the whole family and have dinner together.  Jasmine at New World Hotel acknowledges that and has prepared an extended Chinese New Year Feast for families.

From January 18-30, 2012, families can celebrate Chinese New Year in a luxurious kind of way with Jasmine’s Ultimate Eighteen Treasures Feast on Wood Basin.

Jasmine New World 18 Treasures

It’s a HUGE wooden basin that includes eighteen different food items that we can enjoy by eating them layer by layer.  It’s an ultimate feast and rightfully named at that! 😀

We were actually so fond of the ultimate eighteen treasures that we had to take some time looking at it, taking pictures, observing it, naming the treasures inside the basin and preparing our eager stomach to indulge such great food.  I was in total awe…

Jasmine Restaurant New World Wooden Basin

I tried to get one of each of the treasures in my plate.  See at how lovely it looked?

The feast includes abalone, sea moss, conpoy, sea cucumber, dried oyster, fish maw, prawns flower mushrooms, eel fillet, roasted duck, chicken, pig knuckle, goose web, fish balls, dried squid, taro, radish and bean curd stick.

Jasmine 18 Treasures Contents

The food highlight is definitely the ultimate 18 treasures feast on wooden basin but Jasmine prepared a whole meal for families who’ll be availing the Chinese New Year Promotion.

Here’s the complete menu for the Ultimate Eighteen Treasures Feast on Wood Basin:

  • Deluxe Appetizers (6 Kinds) – eggplant sesame sauce, spicy cabbage, clam meat spring rolls, shredded chicken, bamboo shoot soy sauce & marinated cucumber
  • Double Boiled Chicken Soup, Whelk, ‘Sun Moon Fish, Chinese Herbs
  • the Ultimate Eighteen Treasures Feast on Wood Basin (featured)
  • Poached Chinese Lettuce with Superior Soy Sauce

  • Pan-Fried Chinese New Year Cake
  • LoZhou Pomkam
The whole set menu is priced at Php 29,888 per table of 12 persons and Php 14,888 per table of 6 persons.

We were certainly lucky enough to be able to try out both a la carte dishes and Ultimate Eighteen Treasures Feast on Wood Basin at Jasmine in New World Hotel.  I was completely stuffed after!
