MTV Emerge

I stumbled upon the MTV Emerge Website today.

I ended up browsing the site for an hour.  I was looking for the best artist deserving to get a recording contract with Jeepney music.  There were too many works posted and all of them are really nice.  I wanted to look for something very Filipino as I think this is what is lacking in our music industry now.  Most of the popular music artists now are just doing english revivals and I’m getting sick of it.

Just to give you a background, MTV Emerge is a platform for unsigned music talent in the Philippines.  This is where they can showcase their original work and be given an opportunity to win a recording contract.

mtv-newsletter2_v2

Participants from any music genre are encouraged to register & upload their profiles, photos & original music on the site during the submission period.

All entries will have to go through a public voting process.  Which brings me to my choice to win the contest: Takda by Publico.

Publico is a band composed of UST alumni coming from various colleges.  I like their music because 1st it is Filipino and 2nd it is very original.

I encourage everyone to also vote for your favorite artist/band!  Let us support unsigned Filipino music talents.  Let their music be heard nationwide & worldwide.  They do deserve it.  Voting started last November 2.  By November 20, a panel of judges including Apl.de.Ap of Black Eyed Peas will pick 7 grand winners from the top entries.

Winners will be invited & introduced by Apl.de.Ap himself at a live event to be held at SM Mall of Asia on November 27.

Up for grabs are the ff.:

  • one-year recording contract with Jeepney Music
  • mentorship under Apl.de.Ap during the contract period
  • contract includes artist management & promotion, digital distribution of 3-6 songs & strategic marketing plan for the signed artists to break into both the Philippines & international markets.
Seems cool right?  Good luck to all who submitted their work/s.  🙂
MTV Emerge is MTV, Jeepney Music & Department of Tourism collaboration that is hunting for the hottest unsigned music talent from all genres of music (indie, rock, hip-hop, R&B, metal, solo artists, DJs, etc).  At the same time, it is an online music community where new music from the Philippines can be discovered.

Jeepney Music was created by Apl.de.Ap of the Black Eyed Peas.  It is not just a record label – it is an entity of change created to give back to the Philippines & the Globe.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) is the Philippine government agency responsible for promoting tourism as a major socio-economic activity, spreading its benefits to sectors of society.

Cheap Movie House in Taipei

If you’re a movie buff and in a budget, you would love this movie house located at 公館 Gongguan area, Taipei, Taiwan.

A normal movie ticket in Taiwan is sold between 290NT to 320NT.  This cinema, 來來佳佳大戲院 (go the movies) only costs 100NT for 2 movies that were just shown 2 to 3months ago.  Wow!

The theater normally feature different combination of movies.  There are hollywood movies & chinese movies so you can take your pick.  My mom always go to there.  She told me that it really doesn’t make much difference because the movie is still new in her opinion (w/c I agree by the way).  Just 2 months after its major release is still fresh and I still consider that as new as well.

So if you’re living in Taipei and in the mood to have movie marathon.  This is the place to go.

We do have “somewhat” similar promos here in Manila.  SM cinemas offer us old movies for just Php10!  I mean it’s pretty much free!  But the movies are from wayyy wayyy back, like years ago.  I hope local movie houses do something similar as ä¾†ä¾†ä½³ä½³å¤§æˆ²é™¢ (go the movies).

Metropolis – a Series of Philippine Indie Films

Metropolis (poster_final)

Philippine Independent Films is fast becoming popular worldwide.  This is proven by the awards the Philippines has been getting from respected award-giving bodies.  These films boldly embodies the Filipino experience with excellent artistry & insight.

With this in mind, I suggest that you go see the Indie Sine at Robinson’s Galleria on November 24 (November 21) for Metropolis, a series of independent film screenings.

The event is presented by Anahata Foundation for the benefit of its community-based projects involved in movement, performance, fashion, media, visual arts & concern for the environment.

Metropolis will feature the ff. 3 Philippine Indie Films:

  • Iskwaterpangk (2006) | 1:00PM (2:00PM)
An urban punk rock vibe not to be missed. Directed by Khavn De La Cruz.
  • Batad (2006) | 3:00PM (4:00PM)
The coming of age of an indigenous Ifugao boy.  Directed by Benji Garcia.
  • 24K (2009) | 5:00PM (6:30PM)
a Hawaiian Orchid Award nominee.
The secret world of post war treasure hunting.  Directed by Ana Agabin.

Tickets are sold at Php150 per film and available before each screening.  You can also text your name to +639296944138, +639087568699 or +639278748789 for reservations/group bookings.

I hope you do catch the film screening as this is for a good cause.  Plus you would be able to watch quality films made by Filipinos.  The filmmakers will also drop by to introduce their film & share their insights about the industry.

The Brockas will perform live after the film screenings at 8:20PM.

I’ll be there to watch all 3 movies.  Will I see you there on November 21?  I sure hope so!  See you! 🙂

** The organizers moved the date to November 24, 2009.  With this change, I will not attend anymore due to schedule conflicts.

Battle for Terra Movie Review

4025716857_9e3a832201

Last night was the premiere of Battle for Terra at SM North Edsa.  I’d like to thank Jonel for giving me his tickets!  It was the 1st time for me to watch a movie in full 3D!  Wohoo great job SM Cinemas!

Now I know the feeling of watching a movie that makes you feel like you’re not watching a movie per se.  Watching a movie in 3D, IMHO draws you closer to the film.  To add to that, the movie had amazingly clear images & cool surround sound!  That made the experience even more awesome!

Battle for Terra was a 2007 animated film that won the Grand Prize for best animated feature at the 2008 Ottawa International Animation Festival.  It was originally shown as 2D but was rendered in full digital 3D.  The movie is currently and exclusively shown at all SM Digital theater branches nationwide (regular showing will begin on October 21, 2009).

me in the movie house wearing the 3D glasses 😛

The story had a different twist into the human-alien movie.  This time it is the humans who invaded a peaceful alien planet (Terra).  Will an unlikely friendship between a human and an alien help the 2 races stop a war & help them coexist before it is too late?

I really liked how they turned the tables & gave us a different perspective on aliens experiencing invasion. I liked how the twist is the aliens are the ones being invaded; truly unique and i find that makes the movie more interesting. I will not share the story, but I suggest you watch it. Winning the best animation award isn’t for nothing right?

My Rating for Battle for Terra: 4 out of 5 stars.
