Crazy Katsu

Crazy Katsu

Somewhere along Maginhawa street rests a small restaurant named Crazy Katsu.  We didn’t plan to dine at Crazy Katsu but destiny brought us there.  As we drove along Maginhawa street looking for a place to dine in, I exclaimed that we should try out Crazy Katsu as soon as I saw their signage.  From the outside, the restaurant looked promising.  It piqued my curiosity and I was glad that my friends agreed to try it out.

Crazy Katsu was a small restaurant but it certainly has a homey ambiance.  The place was filled with wooden tables and benches.  I liked the simplistic design.

Crazy Katsu Interior

Crazy Katsu is owned by musicians Shinji Tanaka (drummer, Gaijin) & Bryan Kong (drummer, Taken by Cars).  It explains the list of CDs displayed on the restaurant.  We were too busy taking pictures that I wasn’t able to browse through the list of albums.  I should check them out when I go back (yes, I plan to!).

Crazy Katsu Group Shot

The wall piece at Crazy Katsu was really eye-catching!  The lighting made it look much better so it’s not surprising that we used that as background for most of our pictures there.

Crazy Katsu Design

The restaurant had simple interiors, and their food menu is just as simple.  They had a one-pager straight to the point menu that listed down Crazy Katsu’s specialties.  There were just 5 of us, but we almost ordered everything that Crazy Katsu had, hahaha!  So here is a list of things we tried out.  Everything was delicious and it made me glad that we took a chance in trying out the place.

  • Gyoza (Php 120)

Crazy Katsu Gyoza

Do you know that Crazy Katsu would everyday make their gyoza from scratch?  That explains why I enjoyed this dish very much!  We ordered gyoza for appetizer and it was the first dish that we tried out.  It paved the way for more exciting dishes to try out.

  • Fish & Vegetable Tempura (Php 140)

Crazy Katsu Tempura

All Crazy Katsu dishes are served with a cup of rice.  I guess they were meant to be eaten by 1 person.  However, we wanted to try out all food items we ordered.  Whether you decide for them to take out the rice, the price would be the same.  So, we kept the rice for the fish & vegetable tempura.

  • Iced Tea (Php 30)

Crazy Katsu Iced Tea

Their iced tea was home-brewed!  I still thought it was a bit on the sweet side though.

  • Chicken Katsu (Php 145)

Crazy Katsu Chicken Katsu

The house specialty is Chicken Katsu.  I must agree!  Crazy Katsu’s chicken Katsu was unique.  The soy-sauce that they poured over the dish plus the spiciness of it made it a winner in my book.  If there’s one dish that you should try out in Crazy Katsu, this must be it!

  • Katsudon (Php 150)

Crazy Katsu Katsudon

I wanted to have Chicken Katsu but I saw that everyone ordered Sukiyaki for themselves.  I wanted to try out as many dishes as possible so I went for Katsudon.  It’s pan-fried pork cutlets, onions, and egg on top of rice.  I didn’t like the dish that much.  I guess it has something to do with my lingering taste for their chicken katsu.

  • Sukiyaki (Php 190)

Crazy Katsu Sukiyaki

Oh, the sukiyaki!  The only beef dish that Crazy Katsu serves.  This was definitely a hit!  I was able to try it and I must say it was tasty and oozing with flavors.

  • Pudding (Php 80)

Crazy Katsu Pudding

I LOVE Crazy Katsu’s pudding or shall I say, ‘Leche Flan’.  The chef made this perfectly and I’m not exaggerating!  It has the right amount of sweetness and texture.  We ordered for sharing because we were too full already.  It’s a good way to end an excellent meal.

There are certainly lots of reasons why I want to go back to Crazy Katsu.  Aside from the yummy and affordable food that the restaurant serves.  Crazy Katsu also has a pool of friendly staff!  Service is definitely top-notch.  Kudos to the owners for training them well 🙂

Crazy Katsu Friendly Staff

For huge fans out there, Crazy Katsu sells its own T-Shirt designed by Team Manila for Php 500.

Hunger Games Movie Review

Hunger Games Movie

I never heard of Hunger Games until a week before The Hunger Games opened in Manila.  There was a lot of hype!  I learned that the movie was based from a book of the same title by Suzanne Collins.  I rarely read fiction so when I entered the movie house to watch The Hunger Games, I had no idea whatsoever what the movie was all about.

Panem, formed from a post-apocalyptic North America, was composed of 12 districts that were controlled by Capitol.  The Hunger Games was a televised battle created by the Capitol as a brutal reminder of the districts’ failed rebellion.  Each year, one boy and one girl (aged 12 to 18) are randomly selected from each of the districts to compete in the annual deathly battle.  When Katniss Everdeen’s younger sister was chosen as one of District 12’s representatives, she volunteered to be the tribute in her place.  Pitted against 23 other tributes, Katniss relied on her hunting instincts and her training from former winner Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) to emerge as the games’ sole victor.

Hunger Games is part one from the trilogy (Catching Fire being the 2nd and Mockingjay as the 3rd & final one).  It was nice that one of my friends that I watched the movie with, had read all three books.  I was practically bugging her about the story after.

I must say, I enjoyed the movie very much.  This was the first time that I had the urge to read the books after watching a movie adaptation.  I immediately got myself copies of all three books by Suzanne Collins and read all of them during the long weekend.

Actually, if you haven’t read the book, you can still understand the story altogether by watching the movie alone.  There is no need to understand it further by reading as the movie makers did an excellent job!  They made a perfect adaptation.  I realized that after reading the book.

One of the reasons why I think the movie was successful was the casting.  Jennifer Lawrence was stunning and extremely effective as Katniss Everdeen.  All supporting cast were perfect too!  They were all in character.  It’s not surprising for the viewers to feel affected by each moving scene.  I felt that especially when Rue died, I shed so much tears during that scene.

The movie didn’t concentrate on the love factor which was quite refreshing in my honest opinion.  I liked that the female lead was strong and doesn’t rely on men to survive.  A good welcome change from the usual teeny-boop movies.  That’s why I think The Hunger Games was successful not only for the young audiences but also adults (both men and women)!  I can’t wait for the next installment of the movie, which is Catching Fire.  It bums me out that it will come out November 2013 which is like 1.5 years wait!  Too long, too long..

Oh well, may the odds be ever in your favor.

The Hunger Games is a must-watch, don’t miss it!

My Rating for Hunger Games: 5 out of 5 stars

Cafe France

Cafe France

Sunday is Lord’s day for us Christians.  Yesterday, we decided to have breakfast at Cafe France before attending Lord’s day.  It’s funny that in spite of Cafe France running for more than 1 year, I haven’t heard of it.  However, as soon as we parked the car in front of its U.N. Manila branch, I noticed that it must be Delifrance rebranded.

Apparently, I was right!  Jollibee who used to own Delifrance franchise in the Philippines sold its Delifrance assets to Euro-Med Philippines last December 2010.  Since then, existing Delifrance branches were changed to Cafe France, giving it a new image.  Filipinos love to hang out at Cafes and rebranding Delifrance into a coffee shop will tap more customers in the Metro.

Cafe France Counter

Cafe France Ambiance

Cafe France still served French style baked products like croissants, baguettes, etc.  You can either buy those products for take out or order for dine in.

Cafe France Pastries

We decided to order some of Cafe France’s breakfast sets for dine in.  Price is a bit steep for my taste but my companions seemed to like the restaurant.  Service is good though.  Without asking for water, we were even served it.  Servers were easy to call out for any requests.

Cafe France has decent ambiance too with refreshing colors and well-maintained interiors.

  • Egg Salad Sandwich (Php 155)

Cafe France Egg Sandwich

Brother Joseph ordered egg salad sandwich.  It looked like a club sandwich with potato chips on the side.  I’m not fond of sandwiches but I really liked that Cafe France decided to put potato chips with their sandwich sets instead of the usual french fries.  Suffice to say, I took some of my friend’s potato chips 😛

  • Ham and Cheese Omelet (Php 185)

Cafe France Ham Omelette

Sister Shilo ordered Ham and Cheese omelet.  With a whopping price of Php 185, I’m not really sure if it was worth the price.  I guess the whole brand and quality of preparation attributed to the tag price.  It was basically ham and grated cheese wrapped in scrambled egg, served with 2 pieces of bread on the side.

Rice Meals

Siobs Debbie and I ordered rice meals.  I ordered beef while Debbie ordered fish.  Cafe France’s rice meals had several options.  You can either order a la carte, with soft drink (+Php20) or with juice/coffee (+Php50).  I’ve always enjoyed Delifrance’s orange juice so it didn’t take much time for me to decide to order the one with orange juice.

Cafe France Drinks

  • Breakfast Beef & Egg (Php 175)

Cafe France Beef

I was expecting tapa (Filipino-style beef) but was surprised that it actually was Japanese-style beef.  Fatty beef strips that were cooked in butter – unhealthy but oh so tasty! 🙂  My order came with salad, two sunny side-up eggs and rice.

  • Fish Fillet in Tartare Sauce (Php 175)

Cafe France Fish

I almost ordered fish fillet and I was relieved that I have chosen beef over it.  Cafe France gave generous servings of the fish.  However, I guess I didn’t appreciate that they cut thinner strips of fish as usual.  I prefer the bigger rectangular cut but I think this all boils down to preference.  Still, a successful dish as my friend enjoyed her order and finished it!

We had breakfast early in the morning and I looked newly awake.  Still! hahaha!  Anyway, I had a great time with church friends.  I’m especially glad because I get to spend more time with Debbie as our barkada don’t go out that much anymore since most of them got married recently.

Cafe France Roch and Debbie

As I write this post, I remember that yesterday I saw three different Cafe France branches.  So funny that I decided to immediately write this review over other stories that I need to write quickly.  We had breakfast at Cafe France U.N. branch, saw another branch when we visited a church friend at Metropolitan Hospital in Manila and lastly, saw another Cafe France at MOA while we were strolling around the mall.

So, that was my experience yesterday with Cafe France.  Oh, and by the way, the U.N. branch is open 24 hours daily.

Balkan Yugoslavian Home Cooking

Balkan Yugoslavian Home Cooking

In our office, almost everyone watches basketball, and they are most passionate about UAAP games.  I guess everyone has a certain pride with their alma mater.  And who doesn’t like to eat?  With a passion for both basketball and food, I’m pretty sure that knowing former De la Salle green archer member Marko Batricevic opened a restaurant will bring in fans to the place.

This was actually the pitch when I got invited to try out Balkan.  I was both excited to try out Yugoslavian cuisine as well as to meet Marko.  When I first saw the owner, I was shocked!  He is tall, like 6 foot 5 inches tall! :O

He shared with us that the Makati branch is their second Balkan restaurant.  They first opened Balkan Express in San Juan and it was a huge success considering Marko got his ROI in three months!  Wow!  Three months!  Restaurants usually gets their ROI in 1-2 years but Balkan Express got theirs in so little time!  It triggered my curiosity even more.  What is with Balkan that made it so successful?

I surveyed the restaurant and immediately noticed the unique design of the ceiling.  I haven’t been to any of the Balkan countries, but I suspect there’s something very traditional about the ceiling design.

Balkan Design

The Balkan Makati branch has a relaxing ambiance and definitely considered to be a comfort place.  There are photos of notable people and places in Serbia.  It somehow gave us a glimpse of where Marko was from.

Balkan Ambiance

How about the food?  What makes Yugoslavian cuisine unique?  As I learned and noticed while we dined at Balkan, they weren’t focused on presentation.  What’s really nice and I believe most of us dining customers would appreciate more is Balkan’s huge servings on their dishes plus the price, is really affordable!  I wonder how they made money since they are really generous with the food that they serve.

Have you tried Yugoslavian food?  It was my first time to try out and I’m sure it won’t be my last…

  • Goulash (Php 250)

Balkan Goulash

The beauty of being able to try out different restaurants is knowing the history of each of them.  Like Balkan for example, it was my first time to dine in a Yugoslavian restaurant.  I came to know that Goulash is apparently a classic beef stew of the Balkans.

The goulash is made of lean beef, onions, and paprika served with noodles.

Balkan Bread

The wonderful soup is best eaten with Balkan Bread.

From the Grill

  • Pljeskavica (Php 200)

Balkan Sandwich

I had to wait for the bloggers to cut the burger so that I can show you through a photo how mouth-watering the dish looked like.  Pljeskavica is a traditional serbian hamburger served with home made sauce, tomato, lettuce, onion, and french fries.

  • Stuffed Pljeskavica (Php 320)

Balkan Stuffed Pljeskavica

If you’re like me who prefers rice over sandwiches or buns, then I suggest you order this stuffed version of Pljeskavica.  Boy, once you cut the burger half?  You’ll see the mozzarella cheese coming out.  Oh I promise you’ll have a good time eating this dish.  Just by the looks of it, while I’m trying to describe this dish, my stomach is already starting to growl..

  • Batak (Php 290)

Balkan Batak with Rice

Balkan Batak with Fries

While everyone had a portion of each and every dish, I was lucky enough to have an order of Batak all by myself.  Batak is boneless chicken thigh, grilled to perfection and topped with melted mozzarella.  I was totally saying ‘delicious’ all the time that I was eating the dish.  My gosh, I never thought that Serbian/Yugoslavian dish like batak can taste this good.  The meat was very tender and every part of this chicken meat was oozing with so much flavors.

Clay Pot Dishes

  • Butkice (Php 650)

Balkan Butkice

Tasty pork knuckles served with baked potatoes and carrots (good for 2-3).

Everyone was raving about this dish!  When bloggers were asked which dish they liked the most, it seemed that the pork knuckles were a clear winner!  I always thought that pork knuckles are best eaten fried.  Apparently, baked pork knuckles work wonders too!  I was able to taste one small piece of this.  In spite of tasting the dish after 1 hour of being served, and feeling satisfied still, then this must be something.  Balkan’s butkice/pork knuckles is a must order friends!  Don’t forget this!

  • Sarma (Php 260)

Balkan Sarma

Pickled cabbage rolls stuffed with ground beef, rice and spices served on a bed of mashed potatoes sprinkled with paprika.

I’ll make sure I’ll order Sarma next time as I wasn’t able to taste this during the foodie meet.  Balkan’s San Juan branch will be my next destination as it was there where Balkan started and became successful.

Lamb

  • Jagnjetina (Php 700)

Balkan Jagnjetina

Jagnjetina is Balkan’s House Specialty.  It’s imported baked lamb that is very tender that it falls off the bone.

One thing that you have to know is that Yugoslavian cooking doesn’t involve frying.  All they do with food is either grilling or baking which I think makes it a bit healthier comparing to other cuisines.

Salads

  • Sopska (Php 200)

Balkan Sopska Salata

Sopska is a salad that has cucumber, tomatoes, onion, and olives on a bed of lettuce and cheese.

You might be wondering why I put sopska after the soup and main dishes.  You see Yugoslavian dining culture involves eating salads with or after the main dishes.  You might wanna do the same when you try Balkan yourself (just to have a complete Yugoslavian food experience).

Desserts

For dessert, we tried two types of crepes.  I prefer the nutella crepe among the two that were served. 🙂

  • Palacinke (Php 120)

Balkan Crepe 2

Traditional Serbian crepes with fruit jam.

Balkan Crepe 1

Traditional Serbian crepes filled with Nutella.

So that’s a preview of what you can indulge in Balkan Restaurants.  Don’t forget to order wine and mind you, the wine costs less than Php200.  I don’t drink alcohol but I know I need to suggest Balkan’s wine to you all as I saw my foodie friends enjoying theirs.

Balkan Wine

Delicious, flavorful, unique and generously-filled dishes are things you can expect from Balkan Restaurant.  I’m making my visit to Balkan Express real soon and I already have a list of dishes to order in my mind.  How about you?

The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs

The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs

I believe everyone of us is a work in progress.  Which is why I tend to find ways to improve myself.  I know possibilities are endless and time is indeed essential.  One of things I know I should start doing is to read a lot of books.  So when the opportunity came that I can join a book club (even via Twitter), I immediately showed my interest.

The group calls themselves #Gangsters.  I don’t know the history why they called the group that name but I’m okay with anything.  I’m just glad that they accepted me to be part of the group.  The first book that we all decided to read together is A.J. Jacobs‘ book, The Year of Living Biblically – One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible.  It’s timely especially for me as I have started my spiritual journey this year.  I was baptized last Chinese New Year and also, I have started my Project 365 which coincidentally is to read the Bible completely.  So having a perspective from A.J. Jacobs was really good.

A.J. went as far as following all the commandments and rules in the Bible literally.  He bought almost every Bible translation in the market, talking to different religious leaders/people and going to religious places to experience the word of God.

Reading the book was truly enlightening.  I can say that it was also very entertaining!  The author had so much wit and humor that there weren’t any dull moment as I browse through the author’s daily story.

Here are some more things I find fascinating in A.J. Jacobs’ book: The Year of Living Biblically:

  • One of the A.J. Jacobs’ reasons in going through the Bible quest was to instill some religion to his son, Jasper.  I felt it was very loving of him and we wish that all fathers are like that.  Like all agnostics, A.J. knew that there is a God, a higher being, a God that we look up to and always strive to seek.  It’s admirable that he wanted to go through this journey in full so that he can share what he learned to his son.
  • I think, just like the author, I also violate the second commandment a lot.  As what is said, “You shall not make for yourself a graven image”, can be interpreted as not taking photographs, drawn images, paintings and sculpture.  My blog is full of photographs.  I truly believe that if I don’t put photos in this blog, it’ll become boring and readers won’t come back to check more posts.  I haven’t finished reading the Bible but I want to understand this myself.  For now, I have to ask for forgiveness from the Lord as I can’t seem to give this up for Him 🙁
  • I use a life study version for my Bible study.  I find it extremely hard to understand the Bible with just its original verses.  I find it odd why the Bible won’t use simple words so we can understand quickly.  One of the author’s spiritual board members answered this same question with, “Life is a jigsaw puzzle.  The joy and challenge of life — and the Bible — is figuring things out.  If a jigsaw puzzle came numbered, you’d return it to the store.  Same with life.”.
  • I find A.J. attempt in stoning adulterers hilarious!  He really took it literally.  He took some pebbles and threw it at someone who admitted he’s an adulterer, hahaha!  He only tried it once though.  I could feel his struggle in obeying that rule.  Maybe I should try to do this too :))
  • A.J. practiced praying 30 minutes a day in 10-minute intervals.  It actually helped him become a better person because he learned to be compassionate and less selfish especially when he was praying for others.  I believe I should do the same.  I also learned from the book this acronym ACTS (4 types of prayers) which means Adoration (praising God), Confession (telling God your sins), Thanksgiving (being thankful to God for what you have) and Supplication (asking God to help you).  I shall be using that in my own prayers.  Of course, I never forget what my family in Christ always tell me — to always call on the Lord, like saying, “O Lord Jesus”, all the time!
  • Apparently, the Bible has food laws!  Prohibited food items are pork, bacon or any other pig meat, shellfish (e.g., shrimps, clams, lobsters), blood, rabbits, some birds (i.e., eagles, vultures, falcons) and insects (except for locusts, crickets & grasshopper).  Surprisingly, there are fruits that aren’t allowed too!  Fruits like peaches and pears aren’t allowed as we can only eat fruits from a tree that is at least 5 years old.  According to A.J., most Christians believe that Jesus’ sacrifice freed Christians from the food laws.  I was totally relieve to know that as I SUPER love bacon and shrimps!
  • A lot of people take Bible as a self-help book which I’m guilty of too.  It’s nice that I get reminded that religion is more than that, it’s about serving the Lord 🙂
  • This verse from the new testament: “Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud, it is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of doings“.  The author actually listed down wrong doings of his wife but after reading the verse, he immediately deleted it.  For everyone out there, if we doubt love whether it’s for family, friends or partners, it’s best that we always refer to the verse.
  • I easily get angry when on the road that I tend to curse while driving.  Outside of road rage, I don’t curse but when I’m extremely angry, I curse too.  I know it’s wrong and we should learn to react better when situations calls for it.  Knowing that the Bible wants us not to say bad words or cursing, made me wanna stop cursing altogether.  I hope I can do it.  There are two genres of Biblically naughty words and they are: blasphemy [not to use God’s name in vain (use God’s name only when praying/talking about the Bible] and profanity (e.g., s-word, f-word).

I had a lot of aha moments while I read through The Year of Living Biblically.  I also tend to think if I should do some of the things that A.J. Jacobs did.  Things like not wearing mixed-fiber clothing (wool-linen combination), using white garments often and not working on a sunday.  There are some things that I find personally outrageous and I’m itching to find out myself as I read the Bible.  I consider myself a Christian already but I know I’m still a young one when it comes to my faith.  So this book gave me tons of insights and learnings.

I highly recommend you read this book by A.J. Jacobs.  I appreciate the author’s writing a lot that I suggested to the #GangsterBookClub that we also read his other book, The Know-It-All, next.
