Iron Man 3 Movie Review

Iron Man 3 Movie Review

Iron Man 3 is definitely the most anticipated movie last weekend.  When I went to the mall to check out the cinemas, there weren’t even other movies being shown apart from Iron Man 3.  Guess what?  We even had to queue for half an hour just to be able to purchase tickets.  When we finally got to the ticket counter, the next 2 showing times were already fully booked.  We had to wait for 7 hours before we can watch the movie.  Were all those hassle worth it?  Hell yeah!

I must say that Iron Man 3 is the best Iron Man movie yet!  It blew my mind and definitely exceeded my expectations.  While I loved the storyline, the action scenes and the comedy, it was Robert Downey, Jr. who made me love and enjoy Iron Man 3 thoroughly!

Downey must have been the most charismatic actor in Hollywood.  In spite of us seeing Iron Man on the big screen four times, we never get tired of the character.  He portrayed Tony Stark brilliantly.  In this movie, Stark had a lot to go through, to the point that he was traumatised.  But you know what?  In spite of that, Robert Downey Jr. was effective in showing those emotions and still keeping the same comedic quality.

Robert Downey Jr. is the star of Iron Man 3 and I must say that he was the biggest reason why the movie is successful.  However, other stars were so great as well and were perfect supporting cast.  Celebrities like Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau, and even Gwyneth Paltrow were awesome!  Gwyneth was given a bigger role this time with Pepper Potts joining the action.  She was gorgeous, sexy and definitely kicked some ass out there!

I also liked how Iron Man 3 focuses on Tony Stark versus Iron Man.  We get to see Downey’s handsome face a lot in the film.  The way they changed how Stark wears his costume is something that you should be looking forward to!

Iron man learns a valuable lesson in Iron Man 3 and you have to watch out for that.  With Tony Stark’s world destroyed by the enemy, he had to depend on his own instincts and devices in order to survive and save his loved ones.  Through that journey, Tony Stark is starting to realise what is most important to him.  The ending would really put a smile to your face 🙂

Oh, and you have to wait for the after credits…. you’ll enjoy the small surprise from the playboy/billionaire/genius/philanthropist Tony Stark and a special guest 😉

My rating for Iron Man 3: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Proposal Daisakusen: Operation Love

Proposal Daisakusen: Operation Love

I have a friend named JB.  He is very very much in love with his female best friend.  Actually, he was in love with her ever since they started their friendship and he didn’t even realize it.  Spectators/Common friends (including me) all noticed it but he kept denying it saying that he only treated her as a sister.  However, actions speak louder than words and it only showed love, love, love, and only love!

Good thing that finally after x number of years, he realised that he was in love.  The problem was he can’t seem to tell her how he really feels.  He may be scared that he might lose the friendship.  But boy, it’s just too obvious that I felt that the only thing left for him to do is to confess.  Sadly, I feel that he will not confess even after she finds someone else or if she gets married.  I’m afraid that my friend will regret not having the courage to tell her he loves her.

Hallelujah Chance!

You’ll hear the main character of Proposal Daisakusen: Operation Love chant those two words in every single episode.  What does Hallelujah Chance mean?  For Iwasa Ken, those are his magic words and could change his life.

Proposal Daisakusen: Operation Love is a Japanese drama shown last 2007.   Considering I don’t follow Japanese TV series made me wanna thank my friend who convinced me to watch it.  He was really persistent to the point that he was pestering me every single day to push me to spend time watching all eleven episodes plus the special feature film shown after that.

Last holy week, I was able to finally watch the whole story of Proposal Daisakusen: Operation Love!  It was definitely one of the BEST TV series I have seen in my lifetime.  I’m not exaggerating!  If my friend took a lot of time convincing me then I’m going to use this blog entry to convince you to watch it too!  I spent one whole day watching but it was all worth it!  There are just too many lessons to learn, too many things to reflect with and too many scenes that can touch your heart.

Proposal Daisakusen tells the story of five individuals who have strong friendship.  It focuses though on Iwasa Ken who was attending Yoshida Rei’s wedding.  He realises that he is losing Rei forever thus feeling miserable all throughout the wedding.  Luckily, a fairy lives in the church and gave Ken a chance to go back into the past so he can confess to Rei what he feels…

  • Yamashita Tomohisa as Iwase Ken
  • Nagasawa Masami as Yoshida Rei
  • Eikura Nana as Oku Eri
  • Hiraoka Yuta as Enokido Mikio
  • Hamada Gaku as Tsurumi Hisashi
  • Mikami Hiroshi as the Yosei/Fairy

Proposal Daisakusen Correlation Chart

There is one catch though.  The fairy can let Ken go back to the past through the photos shown during the slideshow at the wedding.  Ken will be able to relive that moment where the photo took place.  However, he must return to the present once the photo has been taken.

Ken is not skilled in courting or in facing his romantic feelings thus he couldn’t do anything during his first attempt in time travel.  All he did was change the expression of Rei resulting to her smile in the photo.

But what do we know?  The fairy came back as soon as the second photo on the wedding slideshow showed up.  Apparently, Ken had more chances in professing his love to Rei.  Will he be successful this time?

I won’t expound more because I do not want to give spoilers about Proposal Daisakusen: Operation Love.  You have to watch it to appreciate it.  One thing you must do is to have a roll of tissue beside you while watching so that you can get some when you ended up crying.

I, for one, was crying all throughout.  It was that bad that the next day, my eyes were so swollen, I couldn’t even open my eyes!

The more important thing about the whole experience is there are a lot of lessons to remember by.  Proposal Daisakusen didn’t just talk about love but also friendship.  There were so many words of wisdom.  Even the theme song is sooooo beautiful!

Here are some of the valuable & memorable lines from the TV series:

  • We might quarrel in the future, and there will be a lot of complaints and there will be times of mutual cold war, but still, I hope that you’ll always be by my side.  I will take care of you for life.  Please marry me.
  • There is nothing more pitiful than someone who tries to gain others’ praise by showing off.
  • In the world of architecture, the concept of coincidence is unthinkable.  There would be no result if it’s not built piece by piece. everything is consequential.
  • That’s a lot of hard work.  Even when it’s so hectic right before the wedding.  To girls, their wedding is a once in a life time moment of their life, right?  So there’s no such thing as doing too much.
  • If human strive hard, there are many things that are possible.
  • You’re a flower beyond my reach no matter how I try.  I know this clearly.  So please, because you’re the woman of my dreams, don’t play into his hands so easily.  Don’t get in relationships that will only make you cry.
  • Even though his body is so small, i think he’s the biggest man in the world.
  • The important thing is not lamenting about the past now, but rather to change the present for the future.
  • Ask, and it shall be given.  Seek, and you shall find.  Knock, and it shall be opened to you.
  • Those who say they’ll do it tomorrow are idiots.
  • Men cannot let go of their first love.  Women, on the other hand, cannot let go of their final love.
  • No matter how hard one tries to change the past, one cannot change themselves.  Instead of regretting about the past, what’s most important is to change the present for the future.
  • You should keep looking for the door of miracles. Unless you keep wishing for that, the door of miracles will never open for you.  The key to open the door of miracles exists only in your heart!

Now, why did I mention my friend JB at the start of this article?  Because I wish he will have a fairy like in Proposal Daisakusen when our female friend gets married in the future.  I know it is impossible but I hope one day, JB will finally realise that keeping his feelings to himself will hurt him more.  Maybe he has a chance after all!

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Movie Review

GI Joe: Retaliation Moview Review

A movie starring Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson?  I definitely wouldn’t miss!  In addition, I have a huge crush on the Korean guy in the film and that made me wanna watch it more!

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is actually a sequel to the 2009 film: G.I. Joe – The Rise of Cobra.  Five of the stars [Channing Tatum (Duke), Arnold Vosloo (Zartan), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), Jonathan Pryce (U.S. President), and Lee Byung-hun (Storm Shadow)] including my Korean crush reprised their roles.  I would have wished for Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Cobra Commander still but I guess the producers want a fresh take on G.I. Joe considering the bad reviews they got during the first instalment.

In this movie, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting with the Cobras but they are forced to hide their existence while trying to save the world.  Why and how?  You have to watch the movie 🙂

My friend Kristel and I watched the movie in 3D.  I liked it though it didn’t have that much effects in 3D but I what I appreciated was the surround sound.  It made the whole viewing experience a better one.

Some observations I had while watching G.I. Joe: Retaliation are the ff.:

  • It felt like the producers wanna make us remember that G.I. Joes were made by Hasbro.  They pushed this information on us considering they flashed it not once, not twice but thrice!  I just wanna say I get it!  I really get it!  The G.I. Joes were made by Hasbro!  They were originally toys which we played when we were kids.
  • Spoiler alert: Channing Tatum won’t last a quarter of the movie.  I wished to see him more but that’s how the story went.  He had to die.  It was just too bad because his chemistry with Dwayne Johnson was superb (you’ll notice it through their bromance scenes at the start of the movie).
  • Lady Jaye was sexy!  You have to watch her show her beautiful body in the film.  The actress is Adrianne Palicki.  If you watch the TV series – Friday Night Lights, you would remember her.
  • Storm Shadow (played by my crush – Lee Byung-hun) was such an eye candy.  Honestly, when he was in the scenes, all I did was stare at him.  The actor is already 42 years old but boy, he’s HOT!
  • I wish to have lots of firearms like what Bruce Willis’ character has in the movie.  Hard core to the finest!  I know it isn’t possible but it doesn’t hurt to dream 😛
  • I was expecting for Bruce Willis’ character to be badass like his Die Hard character.  However, I was disappointed.  While his role was a former general, all the good fight scenes went to the ninjas.
  • Snake eyes will never ever let his face show.  I was hoping that he would at least reveal his face in the ending but that didn’t happen 🙁
  • The best scene ever and I’m pretty sure everyone who saw G.I. Joe: Retaliation would agree with me is the Flying Ninja fight at the mountains.  I was watching with awe… sooooooo awesome!!

Overall, an entertaining movie to watch and it’s mainly because of the big stars like Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum & Bruce Willis.  G.I. Joe: Retaliation is a light movie to watch perfect if you wanna relax after a long day of work.

My Rating for G.I. Joe: Retaliation: 4 out of 5 stars

Wrong Ramen

Wrong Ramen Restaurant Review

Wrong Ramen … what an interesting name!  Why would someone name their restaurant so negatively?  Still, my curiosity got the best of me!  My churchmates and I tried Wrong Ramen a few weeks ago.  I guess reverse psychology works!  No matter how wrong the ramen are in the restaurant, we still opted to pay it a visit.

Wrong Ramen Decor

Opened January 31, Wrong Ramen surely got a lot of attention from foodies.  Apart from the catchy name, the ramen actually tasted great!  Where can you find a place that sells ramen with bacon, spam and sunny side up egg?  Only in Wrong Ramen, baby!

Wrong Ramen Posters

Wrong Ramen prides itself for being locally-developed.  They do not pay any royalties to Japanese companies and they can experiment all they want.  Plus, all their ingredients are sourced locally.  This, of course, hits closer to home.

You know what I appreciate in Wrong Ramen?  They are honest that their food is not healthy!  Their food is sinful and we are definitely warned that it won’t help a bit in improving our health.  But hey, sinful food are the yummiest ones!  I would cheat myself every now and then just to eat wrong unhealthy things (like what Wrong Ramen serves!).

Even their chopsticks were positioned as ‘X’!  I’m sure you know what that meant 😉

Wrong Ramen Chopsticks

The restaurant is really small.  I think it can only fit around 30 diners.  However, Wrong Ramen made good use of its space.  The bar tables facing the window have removable dividers so even if non-acquainted diners sit together, they can still have their privacy.

Wrong Ramen Interior

The artwork on the walls characterised what Wrong Ramen is all about.  This particular display caught my attention the most.  With the ‘Good Fatty Ramen‘ in mind, all of us ordered ramen!

Wrong Ramen Scrabble Decor

We were all ecstatic how the ramen would look and taste like!

Small Plates

There were a couple of appetizers available like Bacon Katsu (Php 260) and Enoki mushroom fries (Php 150).  I couldn’t figure out why my friends ordered three Chashu Rice Rolls!  THREE!

  • Chashu Rice Rolls (Php 180)

Wrong Ramen Chashu Rice Rolls

shredded chashu rolled in Vietnamese rice wrappers.  Served with ponzu sauce.

I found it unusual that Wrong Ramen went with the fresh roll.  If they want to project an image that all the food they serve are wrong, then they should have fried the chashu rice rolls.  I would assume that they went the fresh route because of the pork inside, they don’t wanna overdo it, I guess.

Tsukumen

Are you the type who enjoy eating your noodles separate from the broth?  Then Wrong Ramen’s tsukumen is the way to go.

  • Buffalo Chicken Tsukumen (Php 445)

Wrong Ramen Buffalo Chicken Tsukumen

they said it was a bad idea.  stir-fried noodles topped with chicken karaage and bleu cheese mayonnaise served with a spicy and tangy buffalo dipping sauce.

Wrong Ramen mentioned in their menu that the combination of ingredients were a bad idea.  You know what?  It wasn’t a bad idea at all!  Our friend Lawrence, who actually is very critical of ramen, liked it a lot and gave it a 8.5/10 rating.

Buffalo broth, fried noodles, chicken karaage and bleu cheese mayonnaise?  Very successful, Wrong Ramen!

Classic Ramen

In Japanese restaurants, they serve four kinds of ramen (Shio, Miso, Shoyu & Tonkotsu).   Wrong Ramen serves only one and that is tonkotsu.  Why?  Pretty obvious – Tonkotsu is the wrongest ramen of all considering it is made of fatty pork bone that is boiled overnight to create the milky white color and creamy texture of the both.  In short, tonkotsu is the most unhealthy among the four types.

If you want your ramen to be more sinful yet more delicious, get extra toppings like crispy fried egg (Php 55), classic runny egg (Php 65), chashu slices (Php 75) and bacon strips (Php 95).

  • Wrong Ramen Tonkotsu Light (Php 295)

Wrong Ramen Tonkotsu Light

if you’re sensitive to pork fat: a lighter version of our classic milky-white pork bone and chicken broth. served with shredded chashu

Apart from F.U. ramen, tonkotsu light was the most ordered in our table.  If you’re concerned about eating too much fatty food, then this lighter broth version can make you feel less guilty 😛

  • Wrong Ramen Tonkotsu Rich (Php 380)

Wrong Ramen Tonkotsu Rich

if you only eat here once, a deep tasting and filling milky-white, lip-smacking pork bone and chicken broth.  served with sliced chashu.

There was something in the broth that I didn’t like.  Maybe it was just me but I felt it was a bit sour and has a fishy taste.  The pork though was heavenly and it really melts in the mouth.

  • The Communist’s Ramen (Php 370)

Wrong Ramen Communist

inspired by Chinese hotspots. seven Asian spices and flavourings in a fiery red pork broth topped with sliced chashu and burnt garlic oil.

I would order communist’s ramen when I go back to Wrong Ramen.  The red broth says it all.  As soon as the bowl was served to my seat mate, I was already filled with envy!  However, I couldn’t eat 2 bowls of ramen in one sitting.  I said to myself, I would order this Chinese inspired ramen dish in the future!  If you love spicy food, then communist ramen is the way to go!

  • Wrong Ramen Tantanmen (Php 395)

Wrong Ramen Tantanmen

because someone will ask for this anyway. a bold slightly sweet and nutty sesame broth with a mild spicy kick served with ground pork and shredded chashu

If I have to compare between tantanmen and tonkotsu ramen, I would choose tantanmen without a doubt.  The broth was done perfectly considering it wasn’t too heavy yet still super flavorful.  Plus, it has a right spiciness to it.  It would have been better though if the chashu was served sliced rather than grounded.  I do understand why they opted it shredded since they combined it with the ground pork.  This was a successful ramen dish!  My friend who ordered was actually raving about how good it was!

  • F.U. Ramen (Php 425)

Wrong Ramen FU Ramen

Your breakfast in liquid form. black pepper spam, three strips of crispy bacon, melted cheese, and a crispy fried egg in a black pepper and garlic broth

I had to order the wrongest of the wrong ramen the restaurant can offer –> F.U. Ramen.  The combination of Spam, bacon, cheese and egg is something I couldn’t resist!  I just couldn’t!  I must admit that the broth was oily.  I guess considering we have all those oily food immersed in the soup, it isn’t a bit surprising at all.    Did I feel guilty after eating all that sinful food?  No!  😉

To End The Meal

  • Homemade Yoghurt (free)

Wrong Ramen Homemade Yogurt

The surprise of the night was the free homemade yoghurt.  It tasted like flavored yakult and I loved it!  I was actually hoping some of my friends wouldn’t drink it so I could have more of the yoghurt haha!  It was a nice way to end a very sinful meal.

The group definitely enjoyed the meal at Wrong Ramen!  Be warned though that you will need to spend at least Php 500 per person for a meal at the restaurant.  Honestly, the serving was big so if you don’t eat a lot, you might wanna share a bowl of ramen with a friend.

Wrong Ramen Friends

Wrong Ramen — how ironic.  Why did I feel that we had our ramen right? 🙂

Chuck’s Deli

Chuck's Deli Eastwood

Chuck’s Deli is not owned by a person named Chuck.  Chuck’s Deli was a name that was thought out randomly by owners Marco Alcantara & Chef Katrina Kuhn-Alcantara during an out of town trip.  The restaurant is a wish came true for Marco and Chef Katrina.  They wanted to bring tasty American sandwiches into the Philippines.  That was when Chuck’s Deli started.  In November 2010, at Serendra, they opened their first branch.  It was quickly followed on May 2011 in Eastwood.

Sometime last month, I tried out Chuck’s Deli, for the first time.  I actually felt a little guilty because I haven’t heard of Chuck’s Deli then.  Maybe I really do not go out much or I do not notice restaurants that specialise in sandwiches.  I’m glad that because of this hobby, I get to discover places like Chuck’s Deli or else, I would have missed a lot.

The menu was actually very interesting to read.  I love how witty the names of their food items are.  What some restaurants don’t realise is that even if the taste and quality of food are important, all other aspects should not be ignored.  It’s really all about the whole experience.  You see, it’s not just the menu, the food choices, the beautiful interior and the service but Chuck’s Deli also went as far as baking their own bread and whipping up their own sauces.

I appreciated that I got an invite to try out Chuck’s Deli specialties.  However, other invited guests are close friends so I ended up being out of place.  I couldn’t stay long.  I decided to get a quick bite of each dish and take a mental note so that I would order the dishes that I like when I go back at my convenient time.

  • Fresh Honey Lemonade (Php 95)

Chuck's Deli Honey Lemonade

There are two types of lemonade at Chuck’s Deli: Normal lemonade priced (Php 85) and honey lemonade (Php 95).  I’ve chosen honey lemonade because I prefer the drink sweetened.  I guess, health-conscious people would choose the normal variant.  No matter what we choose, the important thing is the lemonade was made fresh.

  • Chuckatsu Balls (Php 245)

Chuck's Deli Meatball

Balled chicken cutlets with yummy chuckatsu sauce.

Chuck's Deli Meatballs

People can fall in love with a person from the opposite sex at first sight.  The ‘Love at First Sight’ doesn’t only apply to people but also to food.  Upon first bite of Chuckatsu balls, I was totally immersed on its yumminess.   I couldn’t even describe its taste but one thing is for sure, it stuck in my mind and in my stomach 😉

  • The Buffy (1/2 slab – Php 295, 1 slab – Php 590)

Chuck's Deli The Buffy

Slay some vampires with this Buffalo (a.k.a. buffy) chicken and garlic sauce.

Chuck's Deli The Buffy Contents

I remembered a friend when I saw the Buffy served at our table.  I was pretty sure my friend would love this!  He would order buffalo wings wherever restaurant he went to (if it’s available).  While this is not the traditional buffalo wings, Chuck’s Deli made a good twist to it.  They removed the bones and made it into a fillet then put it in their homemade ciabatta 10-inch bread!

One whole slab weighs about 1.25 pounds.  Mind you, Chuck’s Deli was pretty generous with the buffalo chicken.  I couldn’t even imagine anyone would order the half slab as this was just too delicious that people would prefer to eat a whole order of it.

Chuck's Deli Chuck's Challenge

If you’re up to the challenge, you can take Chuck’s Deli’s ‘The Buffy Challenge‘.  Get your name on the Wall of Fame (also posted on Chuck’s Deli’s restaurants & social media accounts) if you finish the Buffy in less than five minutes.  Apart from that, you get the Buffy for free and a T-shirt so you can brag to your friends!  Right now, the best record is at 2 minutes 58 seconds.  Boy, I don’t eat fast but I’m sure some of you can do it!

  • Mother Chucker (Php 295)

Chuck's Deli Mother Chucker

Created to celebrate their anniversary, Chuck’s Deli offered the Mother Chucker.  Oh yeah, it’s truly motherly!  You see, it includes a lot of ingredients like cucumber, tomato, onion rings, arugula, emmental cheese, bacon, chicken salad, runny fried egg, mustard mayo and smoked ham.  Paired with the yummy potato chips, it’s certainly a good product to describe how successful Chuck’s Deli is.

  • Potato Chips (Php 75)

Chuck's Deli Potato Chips

home-made potato chips perfect with garlic sauce.

The potato chips are included with every order of Chuck’s Deli’s slabwiches.  However, it just wasn’t enough for me.  I had to get a full order of it.

Thin, crispy and cooked right – that’s their potato chips and I loved it!

  • Fish and Chips (Php 245)

Chuck's Deli Fish & Chips

Beer-battered fish fillets with home-made fries (chips to the brits), malt vinegar & fried pickles.

Chuck's Deli Fish and Chips Closeup

Most of the people are on diet right now.  I guess I’m influenced by that, so I tend to choose to order fish if it’s available.  Considering how I loved the other Chuck’s Deli’s items, I requested for an oder of their fish and chips.

I wasn’t disappointed!  Every bite was delicious!  The good thing there was that the batter didn’t overpower the main ingredients which is pretty important for breaded food.  While the malt vinegar can give a lil kick to the taste, I enjoyed the fish even without dipping it into the sauce.  Yum!

Before I bid goodbye to everyone in the table, I quickly went inside the restaurant and observed the interiors.  Boy, was I pleasantly surprised!

There was a huge counter right in front of the entrance, everyone can see how the chefs prepare our food orders.

Chuck's Deli Counter

As you know, red is my favourite colour.  Chuck’s deli made good use of the red with the combination of wood and white accent.

There were white boards, red boards and chalk boards all over the restaurant.  Certain trivia about Chuck’s deli, menu items, promos, Slay the Buffy Challenge winners and other information are posted there.

Chuck's Deli Ambience

Many people know me as a rice person.  I would order rice over sandwiches any time.  However, I can’t dismiss the fact that I loved every dish that I tasted from Chuck’s Deli that day.  If I would suggest to the owners, I would wish they offer rice dishes with the same main ingredients.  It doesn’t matter though.  I already have my mind set to go back to Chuck’s Deli.  This time around, I would be with friends and I already know what I would order (i.e., Fish & Chips, chukatsu balls, buffy balls).

Chuck’s Deli is targeting Filipinos who crave for American sandwiches.  I do agree with that.  So if you are the type and you haven’t tried Chuck’s Deli, then make some time to try it.  You’ll definitely have a new restaurant to add to your favourites.
