Sonya’s Garden Spa

Sonyas Garden Spa

I’ve tried Sonya’s Garden Spa before.  If I remembered it correctly, it was 3 years ago.  I availed of their foot spa with back massage (Php 560) & I was very satisfied.  I felt it was worth it!

When Nick & I stayed at Sonya’s Garden, we decided to try out their spa.  In this post, both Nick & I will share our experiences with the service that we availed at Sonya’s Garden Spa.

I chose the manicure & pedicure w/ nail art while Nick tried the hair spa gugo with lemon grass.

  • Roch’s Experience: Manicure & Pedicure w/ nail art (Php 600)

sonyas garden spa manicure pedicure

I thought it would be something really spectacular as nail art is really popular these days.  Apparently, manicure & pedicure is not really a specialty of Sonya’s Garden Spa.  What I’ve gone through is just normal cleaning of nails plus application of nail color & stickers.

I was asked to choose from their nail art stickers, I didn’t like the selection that they have.  I was actually able to peek through the price of the stickers & I was a bit disappointed that they were of the cheap kind.  But then again, when I think about the price that I need to pay for the service, it’s actually cheap as we only need to pay additional Php300 to have all fingers (hands) & toes (feet) for the stickers/nail art.  So it’s just fair.  I expected too much though 🙁

  • Nick’s Experience: Hair spa-Gugo with lemon grass (Php 560)

sonyas garden spa hair spa gugo

Nick’s words:  So, my turn to describe the experience.  Actually it was great, more than what I actually expected.  Sometimes, you have to realize, with the products and chemicals we can put in our hair, the dust and the pollution of the city, it’s nice that such a ‘hair spa’ exists.

Before the whole spa treatment even begins, they turn on this nice ambient, serene, and peaceful music.  Sort of like the ones you use for meditation.  Sounds of nature along with harps, etc.

Going back to the hair treatment itself, first they started off by rinsing my hair with warm water.  And in spa manner, they did this gently by pouring the water over my hair as I sat relaxed.  Then they used their own natural shampoo which also had honey in it.  And they gently massaged that into my scalp.   And then rinse.

For the main step, they applied the gugo and lemon grass mixture and I have to tell you.  This was just a great pleasure to experience.  The coolness of the mixture also had a nice tingling affect.  The application of the mixture was a great treat too, as it was massaged into the scalp, and you actually got a nice massage along with the application.  The guy who was doing the spa treatment, let me sit there for around 10 minutes, and just covered a warm towel over my face, while I sat there with the music.  I think I actually fell asleep, it was that relaxing.

When he got back, he rinsed the gugo and lemon grass mixture, and dried off my hair with a towel.  And the feeling was just great.  Never has a shampoo and conditioning been oh so relaxing and felt great for my scalp!  It was finished off with a shoulder and upper back massage.

The highlight of the whole spa experience was the hot dalandan tea that they served us.  My golly, it was just the most delicious drink I have ever tried!  It was just too addicting that we asked for more.  We just cannot get enough of it!  I asked them what was in that drink & we were told that it was a combination of dalandan juice & basil leaves.  What a great recipe this is…

Because of our experience here at Sonya’s Garden Spa.  We actually asked for the same drink when we had our breakfast at Sonya’s Bed & Breakfast.

This is us after 45 minutes all finished & refreshed! 🙂  The staff were very accomodating & were helpful when I asked if they could take pictures of us hehehe!  But I will definitely not forget that the next time we go to Sonya’s Garden Spa, it’s most definitely best to stick with their massage services.  They are really good at it!

Breakfast at Sonya’s Garden Restaurant

Sonyas Garden Breakfast

Oh, how I love Sonya’s Garden food!  Aside from their famous lunch, they also serve breakfast!   For just Php 427.00 per person, we’ll be able to eat so much food to help us get energized for the day.  This is available from 8-10AM.

We can choose from 2 different kinds of breakfast:

  • Filipino
  • Continental

I’ve always been a rice person & was never fond of breads.  That was why I opted for the Filipino breakfast which includes a lot of dishes.  We weren’t able to finish the food because it was too much for the 2 of us.  But man, it was sooo yummy!

Before I share what we had, let me share with you what the continental breakfast consist of  for those who may want to know 🙂  Sonya’s Garden Restaurant’s Continental breakfast includes cereal w/ fresh milk & fruits, bread w/ assorted jam, ham & cheese omelette, fried potato with herbs, fried white cheese w/ honey, hot chocolate or coffee & seasonal fruits.

So now let me share the Filipino Breakfast at Sonya’s.  It was soo good & sooo worth it, believe me!  I believe a lot of people know Sonya’s Garden as a place which serves good lunch but you should definitely also try their breakfast, you won’t regret it.  We definitely had a great eating experience there.

Our yummy Filipino breakfast includes the ff.:

  • Fried Rice
  • Sonyas Garden Fried Rice

The fried rice here is simple yet so delicious.  As with anything at Sonya’s, simplicity but with great flavor, and even their fried rice does not disappoint.  Not salty or oily at all, and the rice is not dry.  Compliments the main dishes just right.

  • Pork & Chicken Adobo
  • Sonyas Garden Adobo

The pork and chicken adobo is of the dry kind, which also meant less oil in terms of the sauce, which can sometimes be the case with other adobos.  I liked this adobo only because it had the mixture of chicken and pork which is good because at least there’s variety all in one dish.  The seasoning was good with this dish, nothing fancy, again, I think the basic ingredients in adobo went into this dish and nothing more.  Simple, but delicious.  I’m sensing a theme here.

  • Fried Boneless Bangus
  • sonyas garden boneless bangus

Oh fried bangus, what can I say.  Fried bangus is really one of my favorite dishes too.  I especially like the inner portion since i always feel it’s the more tastier portion.  But with this bangus, you wouldn’t mind any part of it.  I believe they marinade this for a while before they fry it, because you can really taste the garlic and a little vinegar taste to it, not to mention some spices that I just can’t figure out what it is.  I guess it’s their secret as to why it taste just so yummy.  This bangus with their rice is a great combination.

  • Omelette
  • Sonyas Garden Omelette

Their Omelette was cooked nicely too.  One or two ingredients, cheese, and that’s it.  Did I mention that as with the rest of the menu items, this also wasn’t salty or too much.  At Sonya’s even their omelettes are light and balanced in terms of flavor  and simplicity.

  • Hot Chocolate
  • hot chocolate sonyas garden

We can also choose from coffee or hot chocolate.  Since both of us decided to quit drinking coffee, we opted for the hot chocolate.  It was fresh, chocolate lovers would enjoy this drink.  The chocolate drink was rich and think in consistency, and the flavor was just perfect, not too sweet or not too bitter.  You can ask for more too!

And don’t be shy in asking for their Basil Dalandan hot tea too, it’s not offered at breakfast, but if you ask, they will greatly accommodate like they did with us.  We even had two teapots of that tea, even in the mornings, that Basil Dalandan hot tea was just too good to pass up.

  • Mango Tomato Mixture
  • mango tomato mix

Their mango tomato mixture was just that.. fresh mangoes, fresh tomatoes, fresh herbs, i think just a little olive oil, and that was it.  It’s a sort of chutney and salsa mix which compliments any sort of meat or even bread.  Sonya’s actually also has this during their lunch.  It’s the freshness of the ingredients that bring out the taste in this nice little side dish.

We were also served mangoes after we were done eating the main dishes.  All dishes were healthy too as most if not all ingredients were being taken from Sonya’s Garden.  Herbs on almost all dishes.  Truly a place to go to if you wanted to eat good food and stay healthy.

Art of Doing Nothing Lessons at Sonya’s Garden

art of doing nothing lessons at sonyas garden

It is so nice that there are activities prepared by Sonya’s Bed & Breakfast for their guests.  They do know that having their yummy food and touring their area will not take the whole 24 hours.  They offer the art of doing nothing lessons which is sooo cool!  Available lessons include basic gardening, compost making, plant propagation, flower arrangement, wreath making, cooking lessons, using herbs, firefly watching, walking, trekking & a coconut and fruit farm tour.

The lessons are free for checked-in guests.  We just have to choose one lesson upon check in.  We decided to choose the cooking lesson to be taken the next day.  Fortunately though, the flower arrangement lesson was done next so we were able to join that as well.

  • Cooking Lessons

There were 2 pasta dishes that we had the pleasure of watching prepared, and easy instructions so that we would be able to do this at home as well.  The first dish that they taught us was the garlic herb fettuccine which was actually simple to make.  In this dish, you simply sauté the garlic in olive oil, then add the fettuccine pasta. Add the herbs, in this case, tarragon was the herb used. Salt to taste, and garnish with mango tomato chutney. Add a good amount of grated parmesan cheese, and this is a dish that people will be amazed about, and yet so simple to make. The best thing about this dish, especially at Sonya’s is that the herbs are grown right there, as well as the tomatoes too. Everything is fresh and organic which is always oh so healthy for you.

dish 1 sonyas garden

This dish, the penne pasta with spicy tuna according to the instructor of the cooking class is the favorite dish of Sonya herself. With that kind of endorsement, this dish must really be good, and tasting the final product is really proof that it is definitely delicious.

The dish is prepared like most any other pasta dish, by sautéing garlic in olive oil, then adding the onions. In this dish, fresh diced organic tomatoes were added too. As soon as the tomatoes were cooked just enough so that it lost its firmness, the spicy version of Century Tuna was added, including the sauce which contains the spices and the marinade of tuna. Then around two tablespoons of tomato paste was added to give the dish a full bodied tomato taste. To taste, black pepper was added, as well as a little sugar to balance out the tartness of the tomatoes. It’s good to remember that in any seafood or meat dish such as this, sugar is good substitute for MSG to bring out the taste too.

The penne pasta was added and then the fresh basil mixed in at the end. It’s always important to add the herb in the end so that the dish doesn’t become bitter, and that you can get the full taste of the herb. With fresh herbs, you need not cook it long.

Garnish with parmesan cheese, and you have a meal that you will definitely come back for, especially for pasta fans out there.

This is me with our instructor.  She’s very much an all around talent, she’s actually also our instructor for the flower arrangement lessons! We didn’t get to experience any other lessons, but she also informed us that she was also the one who taught the wreath making classes! Wow!

  • Flower Arrangement Lesson

Sonya’s Garden is one of the popular destinations for weddings.  So it’s no surprise that they do their own flower arrangements.  We were taught first-hand how they do it.  So amazing!  They use the flowers in their own garden.  They actually have some stories about how they got some of the flowers hahaha!   Our instructor was telling us one time, that Island Rose, the company that I had wrote about a while back ago, used to be in a nearby location. Oftentimes they would throw away their old roses that weren’t going to be used for delivery. Our instructor said that she used to go into the waters where they dumped the roses in and gather them up and then arrange the flowers herself.  Now, that’s passion for flowers!   The picture below shows two of the finished products, while the videos below shows the whole process.  It’s amazing at just how much effort it actually takes to make these arrangements.   I can see why such arrangements can often cost a lot.   It really does take a lot of effort, as well as a good eye for decoration.

When you do check in at Sonya’s Bed & Breakfast, do not forget to avail of their art of nothing to do lessons.  It’s super worth it!  Truly enjoyable and we definitely learned a lot 🙂

Leslie’s Restaurant

Leslies Tagaytay

When in Tagaytay, we shouldn’t miss dropping by Leslie’s Restaurant located on the outskirts of Tagaytay.   The best reason is not only the great view, but because of their famous and delicious bulalo!   Not convinced?   Trust me when I say, that not only is the the soup perfectly made, but you get such a big portion of the meat, and the bone marrow, it is to die for!!  And did I mention, that with Leslie’s, they provide unlimited refills of the yummy soup!

I always have that in mind, that before heading back to Manila, going to Leslie’s Restaurant is a definite must for everyone, and not only tourists.

Whenever I visit Leslie’s, we always sit at the indoor area.

leslies tagaytay indoor

But when we went last time, we discovered that there is actually a cottage that you can dine at which is sooooo cool!  You need to pay additional Php500 though to be seated there, but it was well worth it, believe me.  Sitted at a cottage, we’ll be able to see full view of Taal Volcano while we have our sumptuous lunch.  The view is just breathtaking, with the cool wind blowing, the sun shining down, while eating lunch with someone special, it’s truly a magnificent experience.

Here is our view while eating:

outdoor view leslies

Leslie’s Tagaytay branch also has souvenirs available at the restaurant as well as resident musicians that will serenade you.  Don’t forget to give a tip to the band who plays any music that you request them to play.  We requested a Tagalog song for the first song, and they also obliged us with a wonderful second song that they chose, which was an English song.  I am always amazed at the caliber of talent, and these singers along with the guitars in the background was just another addition to one of the best lunches you’ll ever have, especially at Leslie’s Restaurant in Tagaytay.

Here is what we ordered:

    • Bulalo Special (Php 550)

leslies bulalo

One of the best bulalo ever!  It’s such a big portion too, a lot of meat, and not to mention the delicious bone marrow and the soup too.  I requested for more bone marrow and they gave us exactly that. I was just so ecstatic while having it! yum yum yum! A must-order (I really mean it!) when you visit Leslie’s! If it’s Leslie’s, it’s bulalo.

    • Garlic Rice (Php 55)

garlic rice leslies

Filipino dishes are best eaten with garlic rice. Enough said.

    • Sizzling Gambas (Php 299)

gambas leslie

Shrimps served in sizzling plate, cooked in tomato. This is very very tasty, especially with the great tasting shrimp.  Again, as with any Filipino tomato dish, it always has that distinct sweet yet a little sour and spicy taste to it.  Leslie’s sizzling gambas definitely did not disappoint.

    • Buko Juice (Php 79)

buko juice

It is such a treat drinking fresh fruit juice especially if it’s buko. Good for the body plus it’s one of the yummiest fruit juice in the Philippines. You do know though that tourists always make it a point to try out buko juice when visiting Manila. It’s the more popular fruits in our country.

After eating, guests usually come out and take pictures with Taal Volcano.  Leslie’s has a really great spot for taking pictures.  This is me having my picture taken with the wonderful scenery.

Rockin’ Noggins

Rockin Noggins

The most popular theme park in the Philippines is Enchanted Kingdom.  I’ve been to EK lots of times and I just realized that it seems I’ve been visiting it once a year now hahaha!  Anyway, did you notice a section at EK just in front of the space shuttle ride?  I’ve passed it by but never dared to try it until just this year.

The booth is called Rockin’ Noggins.  It offers such a cool service where they provide a product that uses “green screen” technology to superimpose our heads into animated dancing bodies.  Believe me, it’s fun to do and most especially super fun watching the end product!

The 1st thing they asked us to do is to wear the green apron, then we were asked to sit in a stool.  The background of the wall was green as well hahaha!  Only our faces weren’t covered.  I’m actually wondering why they have chosen green instead of other colors, I forgot to ask!

rockin noggins green

We were also asked to choose the song we would like to dance to.  We chose “Shake your groove thing” but boy, there are lots of songs to choose from (girls wanna have fun, I love rock & roll, lady marmalade, thumb thumpin, etc).  While we were preparing, the guy was also editing the images that will be put on the video.

rockin noggins monitor

When it started, all we really had to do was basically move our heads with the music. We could hear and view the video on screen while it was recording so we could make our own moves and make it look like we’re really dancing with the music hahaha! I was too conscious and too shy but Nick, he enjoyed it too much!

Rockin Noggins live

And here’s the finished product:

Crazy! hahaha!  We really enjoyed Rockin’ Noggins!  It was truly worth the time and money.
