Pho Viet Express Noodles and Grills

Pho Viet Express

If you have been reading HeaRty’s Haven, you might have browsed through my Pho Hoa post.  Pho Hoa is definitely one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in the Philippines.  I always have this big smile on my face whenever I step out of the restaurant.  The taste of their food is just awesome, one of the best really.

I recently found out that they have an express version of the restaurant called Pho Viet Express.  The one that we tried out was in Trinoma.  After working out at the gym, we were starving and as we walked along SM the Block we saw Pho Viet Express.  Their menu is similar to Pho Hoa’s menu but only the best selling ones are there.  Only a few quick choices and a bit cheaper too!

I also noticed that they don’t have an ala carte menu, it’s either noodles or rice toppings.  So we decided to just order separately (we usually share).

pho express table

We both wanted to eat healthy.  It was really a conscious effort.  Luckily, there were 2 fish dishes available at Pho Viet.  It’s funny that we ordered those, me the steamed one while Christina ordered fried fillet.

Here’s a complete list of our orders:

  • Fresh Vietnamese Goi Cuon (Php 106.40)

appetizer pho express

Best seller appetizer which is a combination of vegetable and pork spring rolls.  You better dip it in the peanut sauce provided by Pho Viet Express.  It just feels bare without it.  Vietnamese spring rolls is really something different to the Filipino version.  Even our fresh lumpia is totally different too.  What makes this spring roll so great is not only the wrapper, but the light ingredients almost make these spring rolls a variant of the sushi.  And I guess, that’s where I was headed with the comparison, with Vietnamese spring rolls, you really get a very light dish out of it.

Pho Viet’s spring rolls is just a great marriage of very fresh ingredients, with the best part being that very complimenting peanut sauce.  And I guess that’s one way to distinguish Vietnamese dishes is their frequent use of peanuts in their dishes.

  • Steamed Fish (Php 257.60)

steamed fish pho express

The fish fillet was huge!  We can actually share this dish and just order extra rice.  I never thought it that it would be that big, but the funny thing is that I was able to finish the dish all by myself hahaha :p  I didn’t feel guilty though as fish is a healthy dish plus it was so delicious!  Pretty well seasoned and fish was cooked just right.  The many layers of this dish is really something once we think about it.  I know that the fish was seasoned well, it was moist, and yet they decided to really add a lot extras to make it stand out.  And to me, that’s what makes a good restaurant great.

With this dish, they were able to add the layer of extra flavor because of that wonderful broth, the crispy beancurd also gave it some contrast in textures, and those lovely spring onions not only was great for presentation but really added some subtle flavor to this complex yet simple dish.

Honestly, bravo to the chef who conceptualized this dish, every little detail seems to have been tought of, all the way to the presentation of the dish itself.  And most of all, as I said — perfectly seasoned.

  • Fried Fish with Sweet Chili (Php 184.80)

fried fish pho express

I thought that their fried fish wouldn’t taste as good but when I tried it, I was like “Wow!”.  It’s actually better than some other restaurants’ fried fish.  I can’t tell why but I’m guessing it might be the way they cooked it.  Or maybe the flour is much less?

I think it may have been to do with how they marinaded the fish, the coating they used for the fish itself, and not to mention how they cooked it.  I could tell that it was cooked perfectly, and not overcooked.  It was obvious because the fish was so moist, still full of flavor, and very soft and tender.

Anyhow, both variants were excellent (steamed & fried).  My friend and I were both happy campers!

  • Vietnamese Coffee (Php 84)

vietnamese coffee pho express

I’m not a coffee drinker but I was curious how a Vietnamese coffee taste like.  The presentation is definitely different.  They first put condensed milk in the cup and ice (if you want it cold), put on the coffee separator, put the coffee then pour water on it.

You have to put the separator away to drink the coffee.  Very unique and I loved the taste of it.  Not too bitter and not too sweet.  Just perfect coffee.

  • Vietnamese Pandan Mongo Cake (Php 39.20)

pandan cake pho express

Sticky cake composed of Pandan and Mongo.  Simple yet it does its job, a great way to end a Vietnamese meal.  Not too heavy but not too light. 🙂  Again, I rave about just how simple many of the dishes Pho Hoa and its express counterpart has on its menu, and this dessert is one of them.  With this dessert, the texture is something that I always seem to like.  The combination of flavors, texture, and the sweetness is just perfect.

I also like the color combination of the place, orange and green.  Not typical for a restaurant but it works for Pho Viet Express.  PLUS, plus it’s November, which made it perfect for Halloween! hehehe 😛

This is me and Christina super happy with our meal and ready for a whole afternoon of shopping! 🙂

Oody’s Thai Rice, Noodles ‘N Bar

Oody's

Having really close good friends is truly one of the great gifts we have in life, which is why I can still vividly remember the first time I had gone out with two of my best friends, Rhona and Shiela.  It was at Oody’s, and it was a night that the three of us had one of our bonding sessions.  So, when we recently got the chance to go out the other week, we decided to reminisce at Oody’s, order our favorite pandan juice and chat the night away.

The drinks are really the highlight for me at Oody’s Thai Rice, Noodles ‘N Bar even though the food they serve are good as well.  And I cannot forget to mention the wonderful ambiance that they have created for their diners.  Well lit during the day and candle light during late nights.  Good for dates too & social gatherings.  The bottomless drinks are definitely a bonus considering how tasty they are.

While we wait for our orders, free snacks were given to us, fried kropeck and spicy nuts!  I loved the kropeck a lot but yeah it was a bit salty and that explains why it was more delicious than a normal one.  It won’t take as much time waiting because they serve food in a considerable amount of time.  Plus, the bottomless drink will really keep you occupied, it’s that good, I promise!

oodys appetizer

Here are the dishes we ordered:

  • Tom Yam Gung – Shrimp (Php 298)

oodys tom yum goong

As I had expected, Oody’s version of Tom Yum soup was good.  It’s similar to other restaurants, I believe the recipe is more or less the same.  Somewhat like a hot and sour soup cooked with lots of herbs and spices.  I always choose to have prawns go along with the Tom Yum since I really believe it’s the best ingredient for it.

  • Fried Chicken with Lemongrass (Php 188)

oodys chicken

A very unique dish.  It’s basically just fried chicken chopped into smaller pieces, fried with lemongrass until crispy.  If dipped with Oody’s chili sauce, oh so yummy!  This is definitely a very unconventional way to have fried chicken.  The reason it really is so good is definitely because of the lemon flavor that is infused into the chicken.  It was like having some lemon herb chicken.  I think this dish could be a bit refined, but maybe just maybe the style of cooking contributes to overall theme of our meal.  In any case, this dish still tasted very delicious.

  • Pad Thai Shrimp (Php 240)

oodys pad thai

If you’re in a Thai restaurant and you’re craving for noodles then there’s only one menu item to order, Pad Thai.  Oody’s version was full of ingredients and we loved it.  Rice noodles with prawns, bean sprouts, egg and chopped peanuts.  Tasty and truly satisfying.  It was amazing how some dishes really exceeded expectations in terms of presentation and style, and their Pad Thai was really one of those dishes.  If their lemongrass chicken was needing more refinement, their Pad Thai definitely made up for it.  And yet, the most important part of a Thai restaurant for many people is their Pad Thai, and with Oody’s, they definitely did not disappoint.

  • Crabmeat Fried Rice (Php 198)

oodys crab rice

The presentation and the picture doesn’t give the dish justice.  As the rice was just heavenly, though it doesn’t look as delish as intended to be, but if you took a spoonful of it,  you would feel that it was one of the tastier fried dishes you’ve ever tried.  If you are a regular reader of HeaRty’s Haven, then you would definitely know that fried rice is one of those dishes that I never try to pass up.  It’s a dish that I truly love to eat, and sometimes for many restaurants it is the reason I go back.  If there is a dish that I would go back to Oody’s for, then maybe it is this dish.

However simple it might be, that’s just the beauty of how simple dishes, when cooked right, cooked to perfection, with the right ingredients, can really pull up a meal.  The crabmeat that was added to this fried rice was something that I wouldn’t have thought of, but I am so glad they added on to it.  The seasoning was just right, but there was one thing.  I wish they had given me more of a portion hahaha :p

  • Pandan Juice (Php 75)

pandan juice oodys

I believe I’ve raved much about this during the start of this post.  I tell you, the BEST selection of drinks ever in a restaurant!  I always go back to Oody’s solely because of their drinks, the food’s just a bonus.  They offer pandan juice, pandan iced tea and lemon grass juice.  If you don’t have any idea what they taste like, you can ask for a sampler as illustrated above.  For me, their pandan juice is the best.  I believe I downed like 5 glasses of pandan juice that night.  And I still cannot get enough of it!

We noticed one unique thing with Oody’s.  Their table top is made of plastic.  We really thought that this was a genius idea!  No more worries about glass breaking, and cleaning is just a breeze too!  Thinking out of the box really paid off in this case.  Maintaining a restaurant is a hard task and they were able to think of one thing that could lessen the work and stress.

oodys night ambiance

Anyway, had a great time!  Oody’s even though it’s a Thai restaurant is still a major drinks haven for me! 🙂

San Marino Tuna Paella

San Marino Tuna Paella

It’s amazing just how innovative companies are.  San Marino in particular was able to create a Tuna Paella in a can!  As in wow!  In most instances, we can usually only have paella when at a restaurant, and in a group since the serving for paella is usually pretty large.  However, it is now possible to eat a considerable amount of paella at a low price.  And there’s more, it’s tuna!

Another good thing they’ve done is to make the can an easy-open one.  Now, we don’t have to bring a can opener to open it.  So this product really is portable.  Meaning we can bring it anywhere we go, not worrying much how to open or how to cook.  We just open it and we already have paella which includes both tuna and rice.  Perfect!

easy to open san marino tuna paella

San Marino Tuna Paella is basically a Spanish-inspired dish that consists of Spanish rice, tuna, green peas & carrots.  According to advertisements, there are no preservatives added in the product.  This is definitely a good product to consider, San Marino Tuna Paella as a healthy product with high content of Omega 3 DHA which is good for the heart.

Their sweet commercial starring Marian Rivera & Dingdong Dantes just made me wanna try it out even more hahaha!  I guess romance is the theme as they are combining 2 different ingredients into one (Spanish rice & tuna).

san marino tuna paella ad

I tried out the product myself yesterday.  Opened a can for breakfast and it tasted good!  I loved it!  It’s basically sticky rice with lots and lots of tuna and some green peas & carrots.  Good for 1 serving.  I’ve never eaten a tuna paella so this was obviously something new.  I would prefer to eat this as a morning or afternoon snack.  I may even like this more than their corned tuna product as I don’t need to cook rice or bring bread in order to eat it.  It’s an all-in-one product and I’m glad.  Life is getting easier as time passes by.

Canon Collector Cup

Wow!!  I finally got myself a Canon Collector Cup and it wasn’t expected at all.  I knew there were products that look like lenses and I’ve always known that they are expensive.  This particular Canon Collector Cup is worth 25 U.S. Dollars.  I’ve always wanted to have one but with the price tag, I always chickened out.

To my surprise, when the hosts announced the 3rd theme during the 2010 Canon Photomarathon, they said we’ll also be receiving a special gift from Canon.   I actually thought it would just be ID laces or key chains but when I got to the download counter, I was smiling blissfully when I saw what the item was.

I finally found a tumbler to use when I’m at the office, Yay!!  I’m pretty sure that in our floor, I’m the only one who has this.  I first tried the Canon Collector Cup yesterday at home.  My mom put fresh orange juice there.  When I drank the juice, I was in heaven!  I wonder if it’s really psychological huh?  Knowing that I love the tumbler made me love orange juice more than usual 😛

I love the design!  They really did their homework, making it look like the true Canon lens and also making it useful as a tumbler.  The top cover actually reminds me of the sports tumblers in the market.  We just open the small lid to drink and close when unused.  It’s not spill-proof but I believe it does its job.

It’s also important to note that we cannot do the ff.:

  • microwave the collector cup.
  • use carbonated beverages.
  • give to children when filled with hot liquids.
  • overfill.
  • freeze.
  • use cleaners containing bleach or chlorine.

Having the Canon Collector Cup made me forget all the stress & tiredness from Canon Photomarathon.  It was a 13-hour event, only a few will be rewarded greatly.  I felt that I got a consolation prize from the tumbler.  I’m greatly satisfied, it was an awesome souvenir!  Thanks again Canon! 😀

2010 Canon Photomarathon Philippines

Canon Photomarathon

I was lucky enough to be one of 1,000 participants in the Canon Photomarathon 2010 held last saturday, November 6.  I was supposed to join last year but I got sick so I was glad that this time around, I was able to finally experience it!

This year’s Canon Photomarathon was held at SMX convention center.  We were asked to register before 8AM and I arrived 10 minutes before that, whew!  I was expecting a long queue but was pleasantly surprised that it was organized.  They had a lot of registration booths arranged alphabetically by participants’ surname.

I immediately texted fellow blogger Jepoy to ask where they were.  I wanted to at least be in the company of friends than be alone at  a whole day event.  I truly appreciated their company!

canon photomarathon friends

The Canon Photomarathon was a huge event!  I never thought that it would be that prestigious.  During the program, they even had dance numbers aside from the normal announcement of mechanics & contest winners.

canon photomarathon dance number

To my surprise, several Miss Earth Philippines winners were also there to grace the event.

me with miss earth winners

I haven’t attended a marathon in my life because I can only endure a 10km run! hahaha!  Anyhow, this photomarathon is a great concept.  It’s great that I was able to experience it.  I did my best but I know I can do better next time now that I have an idea on how it works.

Basically, the goal is to be able to capture the best picture from among all the participating photographers.  Of course, using only Canon cameras 🙂  An on-the-spot photography contest wherein we were given 3 different themes.  With each theme, there was a time limit of 2 hours to shoot and 30minutes to download.

canon photomarathon timer

We can go out of SMX Convention Center and basically as far as possible as we wanted to go BUT as long as we were back at the download stations on time.

canon photomarathon download booths

During the 1st theme, we actually tried to go out of MOA, but I guess with time-constraints, we just had to stay in the venue for the rest of the event.

As you can see in the picture below I was really excited to start shooting 😛  I was hoping to win as I need a new DSLR.

me excited for canon photomarathon

So here are the themes, I also included the pictures I submitted.  I wasn’t impressed with my 1st 2 submissions but I was pretty confident and happy with my 3rd one.  I guess it wasn’t good enough because I didn’t win.  I’ll make sure I study photography before the 2011 run.  Ehem, ehem 😀

  • Theme # 1: Deep and wide, peaks and valleys go inside or outside, all the place you know near or far.

canon photomarathon theme 1

For this theme, I really didn’t have a clue as to what to do.  But then I got to thinking, maybe I should shoot some McDonald’s french fries because the container is deep and well, it can be wide.  The fries itself can represent peaks, and when it’s gone, there goes your valley hahaha :p  But then I didn’t like the pictures that I took, so I ended up thinking of something else.  What I had in mind next were pictures of stairs because those two can be wide and depending on the steps can be deep as well.  I wasn’t so sure about the peaks and valleys with the stairs, but I got to thinking that maybe it also applied.  However, I also didn’t like the outcome of the pictures.  So, with little time left, I took a look at the escalators in MOA, and decided that it would be my best shot.  And that is the shot that I ended up submitting for the first theme.

  • Theme # 2: Big or small, we come in different sizes, short or tall, we grow in spurts and phases round and round the circle of life goes when we stop, only God knows.

2nd theme submission canon photomarathon

My friend Fritz wasn’t able to come to the Photomarathon, and I was hoping that he would come too.  He’s a great photographer, but knowing that he couldn’t come and also accompany me, he did the next best thing, and helped me out through the day.  Especially with theme 2, he suggested that I take a picture of a construction site in an angle that incorporated loose materials, finished parts of some phases, a foreman with plans, constructions workers, then in a manner that layered each of those parts.  It was a great idea!  I knew that others would go for the usual plants, or kids, or even animals, but I was sure that this idea would really stand out.  I had seen a great construction site just outside of SMX, and it was actually perfect because it had all of the components needed for that perfect shot.  However, the guard would not let me in and take any shots.  And so with time ticking, I decided to look around for other construction sites.  The photo below is the one that I submitted for theme 2. It wasn’t the ideal concept photo, but I really believe it stood out in the sea of photos submitted for this particular theme.

  • Theme # 3: Happy, mad – sometimes we feel the blues, angry, glad – our moods are changing hues, up and down our lows and highs, we close our eyes and then… surprise!

canon theme 3 submission photomarathon

So, for this theme I knew that the main subject were going to be people with all their emotions, smiles, and faces.  We decided to just go around MOA and take pictures of people that were walking by or just sitting around.  With a bit more time, we ended up outside facing Manila Bay.  There were a few people that we took pictures of, and even a few strangers that were willing to be our subjects, but their actions just weren’t natural.  It was a great sight to finally encounter the couple that ended up gracing my final submission.  It was perfect, and I’m really proud with the following pictures.  It truly captures the theme, in my opinion, because no matter how many shots I took of this couple, they were just so immersed with each other as if there were no one else in this world but them.  Truly in love.  And when you’re in love, you are able to feel so many emotions, sometimes all at once.  It’s the one shot that I really felt would give me the best chance at winning.

It was almost 8pm and we were too tired but excited to know who would win the 2010 Canon Photomarathon.  The judges must have had such a hard time choosing over 3,000 photos.  The Canon brand ambassadors themselves were the judges!  At least they were able to see 3 of my works.  It wasn’t enough to impress them but I’ll make sure I’d do better next time 😛

canon photomarathon judges

3 winners were lucky enough to win Canon DSLRs.  I was really drooling while I viewed the prize display near the stage.  I was literally imagining myself holding at least one of them hahaha!  It was wishful thinking.  Congratulations to the winners though.  Ironically, the grand prize winner wasn’t present anymore during the awarding, he won a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and a LOT of accessories.

canon photomarathon prizes

All 1,000+ participants I’m sure did enjoy the event because I surely did!  I’m already including Canon Photomarathon as one of the activities I won’t miss every year.  Thanks Canon! 🙂
