Amici at Ayala Triangle Gardens

Amici

The branch at Ayala Triangle Gardens is the 1st full-service restaurant of Amici.  It is the biggest too featuring 2 big brands: Amici & Cara Mia.

As most of you know, Amici is known to be a self-service restaurant.  I’m glad that they finally ventured into a full-service restaurant.  Especially for someone like me who wants to just sit and enjoy my meal, the change is definitely welcome.

amici restaurant

It was such a delight looking at Amici’s menu.  I love how they incorporated the history of Amici mentioning the priest from Dos Bosco who started it.  Sentimental owners, aren’t they?  We loved it!  I enjoyed flipping through the pages reading and looking at the photos.  But in all honesty, what really got me excited was looking at the actual menu items, because I knew we would be trying those delicious dishes at Amici & the sinfully wonderful deserts at Cara Mia.

amici menu

While looking at the menu I noticed that Amici actually uses a wooden brick oven.  They say that using it will bring out the flavors of the food.  That explains why Amici’s pizzas are so good.  On the picture below, just jook at the chef checking on the pizza that he was cooking.  It’s just so old world Italy almost when you look at the setup that they have.  You can even see all the wood at the bottom there.  Now that’s authentic style pizza if I ever saw one!

amici wood brick oven

Let me share the menu items that we tried out.  The flavors in each dish were distinctly different.  This was the 2nd restaurant we visited at Ayala Triangle Gardens.  I was actually starting to get full hahaha!

  • Spaghetti ai Tesori del Mare (Php 264)

seafood pasta at amici

This was basically a seafood pasta dish that has scallops, clams, mussels with chili oil and fresh tomatoes.  I didn’t like the scallops but the pasta tasted great!   Seafood pasta is usually a great order especially at an Italian or Mediterranean restaurant since their seafood dishes usually are very delicious.  I must admit that the pasta was really done to perfection, cooked al dente, and that the chili oil provided that wonderful essence of deep and spicy flavors, and yet it was so very subtle too.  It was a simple dish with garlic and tomato and that chili oil and seafood incorporated into it.  The problem was that the scallops wasn’t really all that good, and I’ve had some of the best scallops at other restaurants, and this just didn’t make the grade.

  • Tutta Carne (Php 298)

amici pizza

I’m a meat lover so out of the 2 pizzas served to us.  I immediately tried Tutta Carne.  This pizza has Italian sausage, ham and pepperoni with the usual cheese and dough.  With the brick oven, I wasn’t surprised really just how tasty the crust turned out to be.  I love how everything about this dish felt so authentic.  And did I mention that each bite that I took also seemed to have so much flavor, from the seasoning to the sauce, all the way to the dough.

  • Quattro Stagioni (Php 298)

amici four cheese pizza

Cheese lovers rejoice for your pizza is here!  It seemed that everyone wanted to try this out as soon as it was served to us.   And I wasn’t surprised because it really did look so delicious with all the four cheeses being incorporated into that pizza like that.  I even heard one of the bloggers say that it was better than what Yellow Cab pizza serves.  Again, all that flavor not only comes from the seasoning and the sauce, but that wooden brick oven really has to have so much part into creating their pizzas.  That wooden brick oven must really be their secret to success!  And lastly, I’m really glad that the dough wasn’t too thick which can sometimes be the case with other types of pizza out there.  The dough is soggy and sometimes not cooked all the way through.  Just because it’s not thin crust pizza doesn’t mean that the dough has to be anything other than just how Amici served their pizza..

  • Fetuccine at Tartufo Classico (Php 244)

fetuccini pasta amici

basically a mushroom pasta with button and shitake mushrooms.  This was definitely tastier and yummier than the seafood pasta.  I really loved the simplicity of this dish.  Because I honestly believe when it comes to pasta, the important parts of cooking it is having the pasta still firm but not too well cooked.   Then seasoning the sauce to perfection, and adding ingredients that compliment the pasta very well.  With Amici, I think they did a tremendous job in providing that delicious simplicity with this dish.

What I also liked most is that the Fetuccine at Tartufo Classico is one of the chosen products by Amici where each order of this menu item will have Php10 donated to Tuloy Foundation (a charity group for street children).  It was definitely nice of Amici to think of this.  Not to mention, their dishes are actually cheap and very affordable!

Now, as much as I love Amici’s pizzas and pasta, their desserts are just the winner for me.  Last year, they actually formalized it and created a brand for their desserts.  It’s now called Cara Mia.

caramia

Cara mia serves gelato, gelato cakes, usual refrigerated cakes and pastries.  I’m sorry but my eyes were just fixed on their gelato which had been my favorite ever since it was served at Amici.  See my happy face beside the gelato selections.  I was trying to hide my excitement! hahaha!

amici gelato caramia

I was also pleasantly surprised that they serve gelato cakes!  I was like wow, that’s new!  It’s basically like an ice-cream cake but Cara Mia’s version is different.

So we asked, what’s the difference between a gelato and an ice cream?  And they shared with us that the only actual difference is the type of dairy product they put into each one.  Gelato is made from fresh milk while Ice cream is made from cream, it was that simple.  I learned something new that day.  Well that definitely explained why gelato has smoother texture and taste better.  Now we know 😉

  • Peach Walnut Passion (Php 95)

peach walnut passion cake amici

This is bascially peach gelato with walnuts!  Oh my golly!  heavenly!  I noticed that it was not really pure gelato cake but it was a combination of the traditional cake but it has more gelato.  Awesome creation.  Amici really does know that we always come back for their gelato! 😀  I mean, who wouldn’t?  Their gelato is truly something that you have to try out for yourself to really get the idea of why it is so popular!

  • Mango Symphony (Php 95)

mango symphony cake caramia

Mango gelato with mango chunks plus graham crackers.  If 1 slice isn’t enough for you, you can order the whole cake which is priced at Php 690.  I’m also glad that I was able to try this out.  Again, it may seem like the ordinary mango refrigerator cake, but what always separates high end restaurants and desert places is how they take it one step further.  First they use premium mango gelato, add those chunks of mango, the little crumbs of graham crackers too.  And that mango sauce on the side, it’s simple, but it’s that added simplicity that really make Cara Mia stand out.  And don’t forget the taste, in all honesty, this was one of the best mango refrigerator cakes that I’ve tasted.

  • Pistachio Gelati (Php 70)

pistachio gelato caramia

Everybody just couldn’t wait to sample the gelati/gelato.  I didn’t have enough time to take picture in whole as they took quite a few scoops of it already hahaha!  Well, it’s fine.  You get the point right?  It was that delicious!  This green gelato was pistachio.  Yummeh!

  • Sans Rival Gelati (Php 70)

sansrival gelato caramia

Sans Rival gelato is definitely new and I was pleasantly surprised as to how delicious it is.  It will now be one of my favorite gelato flavors in Cara Mia.  You must try this if you haven’t done so.  I just can’t believe how great they were at this, imagine taking delicious sans rival and making it into gelato form!  Brilliant!  I’m now interested as to what other flavors they will be able to come up with next!  And yes, they took a few scoops of it too before I was able to take a picture.  Must not let people wait for Cara Mia’s gelati!

I really enjoyed my time there at Amici/Cara Mia considering I was with my mom and ninang!  They met for the 1st time!  My mom was my official photographer hahaha while ninang Noemi is a fellow blogger.

Roch mom and ninang noemi at amici

I’m definitely glad that Amici has become a full-service restaurant.  I will definitely be back as Ayala Triangle Gardens is just near my work place.  Cara Mia Gelato, I will be back for you!

Bon Chon Chicken

Bon Chon Chicken

I had been wanting to try out Bon Chon Chicken for the longest time, and I’m glad that I was finally able to go last Saturday.  It always seemed to me that they would have very excellent and delicious chicken considering the amount of positive feedback that I’ve always heard from those who have already tried Bon Chon.   From what I’ve gathered, Bon Chon truly is a must try when it comes to chicken.

Bon Chon Chicken is becoming popular considering that more and more people are going there, I do have to let you know that long lines need not be a problem as long as you know when to go.  As some word of advice to all of you, my readers, go to their Ayala Triangle Gardens branch on weekends!  The lines didn’t seem to be as long as the weekdays usually are.

The branch at Ayala Triangle Gardens was their 1st and they actually opened their 2nd branch at Greenbelt 2 last December 18.  Their next branch will be at Libis, Quezon City and they plan to open more next year.  Hey, if you have something as delicious as their chicken why wouldn’t you try to expand right?

Bon Chon Chicken started year 2002 at South Korea but became popular when it finally opened a location in New York USA.  According to Bon Chon Chicken’s marketing manager in Manila, Bon Chon Chicken in New York was voted best chicken in the USA award last year!  So, not only was it the best chicken in some certain states, but to be the best chicken in the entire USA, that’s something that most restaurants rarely ever achieve!  It can only mean one thing.  Wonderful and delicious chicken!!

bon chon chicken restaurant

Here are some of the best sellers in Bon Chon:

  • Soy Garlic Chicken Wings (Php 185)

soy chicken bon chon

Bon Chon prides itself for having less fat and less greasy chicken.  It’s the way they cook their chicken, twice-cooked to ensure that all those fats do not stay in the chicken.  The 1st run on high-heat while 2nd one on low heat.

When I tasted the soy garlic chicken wings, I was delighted as to how crispy and tasty it was.  I asked how they did it and was told that after they cooked the chicken, they put their special secret sauce into it.  It was ready made and shipped from South Korea!  Now, that’s what we call authentic!

Actually this style of cooking is very much familiar to me since many Chinese restaurants also cook their sweet and sour chicken, and other types of chicken this way.  Having that crispy coating and then covered in their secret sauces, it’s a classic style of cooking that really brings out the wonderful taste of the sauce with that added texture and crispiness that we all love when it comes to chicken.

  • Hot & Spicy Chicken Wings (Php 185)

spicy bon chon chicken

If you’re fond of spicy food or would want a better tasting Bon Chon Chicken then hot & spicy variant is for you!  My mom and I prefer this over the soy garlic one.  Be warned though that it’s really hot and spicy as the name implied.

It does look exactly the same as soy chicken garlic wings.  To differentiate it, the staff put a red toothpick to flag it.  Definitely good!  I’ll go back to Bon Chon chicken for this!

  • Bulgogi Wrap (Php 125)

bon chon burritos

Oh, how I loved this.  I was in love right at my 1st bite of Bon Chon’s bulgogi wrap!  It was yummy!  Their bulgogi wrap consists of sirloin beef and Korean coleslaw.  You know what differentiate Korean coleslaw from our normal coleslaw?  They have Kimchi!  Didn’t know that it works really well!  You must try this!

I just love the Korean beef that is served with this.  In many instances, the cooking that Koreans utilize is also quite similar with Filipinos too.  The sauce that comes with most bulgogi is a type of barbecue sauce that incorporates sweet flavors, something that is definitely very suitable for the Filipino taste.

What a great way to start my Ayala Triangle Gardens food trip!  Bon Chon Chicken has other products too like drum sticks, chicken combo and chicken chops.  They also have meals, side dishes and beverages.  I feel the prices are a bit too steep but maybe because of how they prepared their dishes that justify its high price.

See my happy face?  2 reasons: I finally tried out Bon Chon Chicken and most importantly, I was pleasantly surprised with how good it was.  My mom even blurted out that she liked it better than KFC!

Tron Legacy Movie Review

Tron: Legacy

Since I missed watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in Ultra 7 movie house, I had to make sure that I wouldn’t miss Tron: Legacy this time around.  On its 1st week, I finally watched it!  I’m a huge fan of the stars in the movie: Olivia Wilde & Jeff Bridges.   So I was pretty sure that I wouldn’t be disappointed in any way.

I was right!  I loved it!   Hard core Tron fans might not share the same sentiments but to each his own right?   I haven’t watched the original Tron movie.

In this modern world with all those technology advances, I believe they delivered the movie with great visual effects & awesome sound editing.  Not to mention, just how good looking the stars portraying the movie characters are.  It was total eye candy festival all throughout the movie.  I never got bored even though it was already late at night.

Tron: Legacy is a sequel to the 1982 film.  The movie revolves around Sam Flynn who is the son of Tron creator, Kevin Flynn.  It started with him as a child and Kevin showing him some toys that illustrated his vision.  Sam never thought that it would be the last time he would see his father.  As his father disappeared, the company, ENCOM International, which he was CEO of was eventually led by his business partner, Edward Dillinger.

The story unfolds with Sam constantly being haunted by his father’s disappearance, then eventually ending up in the Grid, then finally reuniting with his dad again, trying to escape the grid to go back into the real world, trying to get back his life with his dad and finally, taking ownership of Kevin’s ENCOM International.

The movie trailer below gives you an idea of what to expect.  I have heard mixed reviews but in my opinion, it was a great movie!

What I appreciate most with the movie Tron: Legacy was how it touched on the love of a father and child, the loyalty of a program to its creator and lastly, care & compassion between friends.

I cried quite a few times in the duration of the movie.  The time when Kevin Flynn and Sam Flynn first saw each other after almost 20 years.  It was just too touching, you can see genuine love from both parties.  The other instance where I cried was when Quorra (Olivia Wilde’s character) almost died, I didn’t know that she would be revived hahaha!  Lastly, when Kevin sacrificed himself for his son.  Heartbreaking indeed.

I believe there’ll be a another sequel to Tron but I guess they are weighing things to see if Tron: Legacy earns enough to make one.  I hope the movie succeeds, as I will surely watch the next sequel.  I still wanna know about the status of Tron.  It’s a mystery still.

My rating for Tron: Legacy: 4.5 out of 5 stars.

A Journey Home Movie Review

My mom got a gift from my uncle’s wife and it was a DVD.  To my surprise, it was A Journey Home.   A movie directed by Paul Soriano and a movie presented by Jubilee Evangelical Church & Youth for Christ.  I’ve heard good things about the movie, and I just knew that I would eventually see it sooner or later.

It was much more than I expected.  In all honesty, I was crying throughout the whole movie.  Not just simple crying though, I really had my eyes swollen for a day.  The movie is just full of heart-warming scenes that it’s virtually impossible to keep a dry eye and to keep a closed heart.

I cannot stress enough just how excellent the acting was in the movie.  I think all the artists really gave their heart and soul into each of their roles, most especially Soliman Cruz who did a tremendous job in the movie.   I think the hallmark of a great performance in a movie is making the audience and viewers feel and empathize what the character is going through.  With Soliman, I honestly could feel all the pain, love, and sacrifices that he goes through.  What a great actor!

The story is about a man named Dante who has been out of touch with his family for 20 years.  He lost his job and then finds out that the wife he left has just died.  He goes to her wake and was able to see his children Raffy and Kristine.  Raffy was aloof and obviously mad because his father had left them for 20 years.  Raffy’s wife, Gayle, tries to bring Dante back into their lives thinking that it would heal Raffy’s wounds.

As the plot moves forward, Dante because of circumstances that occur in the movie, moves in to live with Raffy and his family.  As Dante tries to make amends, he actually starts to become really close to Raffy’s wife Gayle and their son.  But true to the reality of how the movie captures real world emotions, Raffy just seems unable let go of the anger he feels for his father.  As the story unfolds, it is very much interesting and encouraging just how much even 20 years of separation can do when hearts open up, and forgiveness becomes the focus.

I love how realistic and how positive A Journey Home was.  It concentrated on the values of forgiveness and family.  Something most of us take for granted.

It’s really rare for us to see that kind of movie in the Philippines.  I also felt a bit sad that it wasn’t shown in major theaters last year.  I guess they intended it that way.  I believe that it should be shown nationwide.  Maybe relaunch it?  Each Filipino should watch a Journey Home.

I suggest going to a video store and grabbing a copy of this wonderful movie DVD.  A must watch and hopefully it will give you a new perspective as to how we see family and how we need to learn to give and ask for forgiveness 🙂

My Rating for A Journey Home: 5 out of 5 stars

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 Movie Review

When Harry Potter burst into the book scene, it started a wave of incredible book sales as children, teens, and even adults couldn’t get enough of the series.  It was a worldwide phenomenon.  And then, with the success of the books, they asked if that kind of success could be translated to box office hits.  Well, fortunately the previous Harry Potter films did well because it was built on the success of the books and the storyline that came with it.

And now, the final book in the Harry Potter series has come to theaters.   Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows is the final installment in the series of books written by J.K. Rowling, and for the movie version, I guess it was just too good that they had to have 2 parts to the epic finale.  This is the movie that finally puts together all the bits and pieces from the previous movies.  Harry Potter fans have been waiting for this movie to come out.  But because they have split the movie into 2 parts, I guess Part 1 had to leave us all still having a few more questions too.

Now, last week was the final week for showing in the Philippines, and leave it to me to just be able to make it at the last moment.  I’m a big fan of the Harry Potter books, so I did try to purchase tickets on its 1st week but failed a couple of times as tickets were sold out.  I tried on its 2nd week and failed again.  I put it off my mind for a couple of days then decided to watch it on its final week in the theaters.  No more stress for me but no chance for me to watch it in awesome theaters like Ultra 7 since that specific theater usually only shows the most recent popular movies that are playing.

I really like that even though Harry Potter was intended for kids, they didn’t make it a cutesy movie.  It’s really a dark fantasy story and I believe they did an excellent job translating it into the movie.  We cannot really expect every single scene in the book to be in the movie.  That’s just impossible considering how thick the book was and how rich the story was.  But being able to have a good flow of the movie was important, while still being able to keep the integrity of what was in the book must have been a big challenging as well.  However, I think they rose up to the challenge and really made the film as very continuous in its storyline where you didn’t keep wondering how each scene was connected.  I believe the people to thank are those that are in charge of screenplay.

Anyway, the 7th installment revolves around Harry trying to find and destroy Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes which provides immortality to the latter.  In this movie, they were able to locate one of horcruxes, a locket.  The process wasn’t easy though.  Ron was fooled to believe that Harry Potter & Hermione was forming a relationship thus a conflict was there.  Harry Potter was almost drowned in the frozen pool while retrieving the Griffindor sword.  Of course, all things turned out to be good as the locket was destroyed by one of the main characters.  Guess who? 😉

The movie had its lonely moments too like the deaths of Hedwig, Mad-Eye Moody and Dobby.  I cried buckets when they showed the scene wherein Dobby was murdered while he was saving Harry Potter’s group from Bellatrix Lestrange.  It was just too saddening *sniff sniff*.  Seeing such a selfless elf giving up his life just to save his friends.

We are left hanging by the end of the movie.  It’s kinda expected as the 2nd part will be shown next year.  I cannot wait!  In the 2nd part, I guess with the same title, we will see Harry Potter’s quest to continue to find and destroy the rest of the horcruxes plus a final battle between Harry Potter & Lord Voldemort.  I bet we’ll also be able to see some love stories unfold throughout the ending.  I’ve read the book and I kinda know what to expect but it’ll be nice to see it visually shown in the movie.

If you haven’t watched the movie here in the Philippines, there may still be a few theaters showing it.  Don’t miss it!  But, if you’re not lucky enough to have watched it on the big screen, I’m sure DVDs won’t be too long until they are available.  Read the book too as a bonus!  You’ll appreciate it more.

Again, I really have to stress that you will probably enjoy this movie even better if you were able to see the previous movies.   Because there are just some key parts of the movie that relates to the previous movies.  But I think how this storyline was handled, you can still enjoy the movie even without having seen the previous movies.  Anyway, go see Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.  There’s just too many aspects of this movie that will truly entertain not just the kids and teenagers, but I do believe this movie is literally for everyone of any age.  With all the plot twists, the great special effects, the storyline itself, I really believe this is one of the must see movies of 2010.

My Rating for Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: 4 out of 5 stars
