Barrio Fiesta

Barrio Fiesta

It’s pretty obvious that I love eating out.  One thing you have to know is that my ultimate favorite Filipino restaurant is Barrio Fiesta.  It has been my favorite since I was a ‘lil kid.  This is mainly because of their mouth-watering dishes like Crispy Pata and Adobong Kangkong.

A few days ago, a Facebook friend posted a picture of Heart Evangelista with a big sign of Barrio Fiesta Greenhills at her back.  Heart is a famous celebrity here in the Philippines and she’s part of the family who owns the Barrio Fiesta franchise.  Seeing that picture immediately made me wanna go straight to Barrio Fiesta and sample their awesome food.  However, I had to wait for dinner time.  I called up a friend and we went to Barrio Fiesta Greenhills for a delicious dinner.

It didn’t take long for us to find the place.  It was a bit ironic that Barrio Fiesta is located beside its direct competitor.  The competitor’s entrance is located at EDSA side while Barrio Fiesta’s entrance is at the back street.  I only have eyes for Barrio Fiesta.  No other restaurant have stolen that ultimate favorite Filipino restaurant title from Barrio Fiesta in my eyes yet.

The ambiance of the Greenhills branch is far from my impression of Barrio Fiesta.  It looked like they applied the accepted design for modern restaurants.  The place was well-lighted and well-designed.  The art work displayed on the walls gives that distinction to Barrio Fiesta.

If you go to Barrio Fiesta’s Makati branch, you can see the difference when it comes to interior design.  The Makati branch has the Filipino ambiance with their tables and seats designed as a Jeepney (Philippines’ famous transportation vehicle).

Barrio Fiesta Makati

No matter how different the restaurant design between Barrio Fiesta branches are, their food is just the same (even from 10-20 years ago!).  I always have the same food order whenever I visit Barrio Fiesta.  However, I wasn’t able to order everything during our visit [missed Buko Juice (Php 65) and Sinigang na Hipon (Php 356)].  I’m really in a tight budget right now but next time, I’ll be back to getting all my original favorite dishes.

  • Crispy Pata – Large (Php 587)

barrio fiesta crispy pata

Anyone in their right state of mind will order Crispy Pata in Barrio Fiesta.  The dish is what made the restaurant famous.  Barrio Fiesta now offers their crispy pata in three sizes, small (Php 487), medium (Php 550) and large (Php 587).  I don’t care if there was only two of us dining but large size was our order.  It was as crispy as ever!  The meat didn’t feel dry at all.  Gee, just writing this entry makes me wanna go back there again.  I must resist!

  • Adobong Kangkong – Half (Php 134)

barrio fiesta adobong kangkong

Another must-order in Barrio Fiesta is their Adobong Kangkong.  Available in different sizes: Half (Php 134) and Medium (Php 253).  What I like about this dish is that the meat and vegetables are swimming in tasty sauce.  Every spoonful was so heavenly especially when you pair it with rice.  You should try it out if you haven’t.

  • Garlic Rice – Family (Php 129)

barrio fiesta garlic rice

Last, but definitely not the least, Barrio Fiesta’s Garlic Rice/Sinangag.  I know this is weird but there’s just one distinct taste in this dish.  Maybe, they put a secret ingredient in the rice or they just perfected the recipe of garlic rice.  I just couldn’t get enough of it!  We even ordered their family size which is good for 4 people!  The server was recommending the cup size (Php 36) but he didn’t know that we could finish the bigger size.  It’s that good!

You have to note that I’m not in any way related to Barrio Fiesta and I paid for our own food.  I really just love Barrio Fiesta and it will always be my ultimate favorite Filipino restaurant.  Whenever I go to this restaurant, I always have this huge smile on my face.

Very Happy Roch at Barrio Fiesta

Hed Kandi Pure Kandi Headphones Review

Hed Kandi Pure Kandi Headphones

I spend most of my time listening to music.  Especially at work, I make it a point to listen to my favorite songs when I’m not in a meeting (music helps me relieve stress).  I’ve been looking for a great tool to make my listening experience good.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t that lucky even if I tried some of the more expensive branded earphones in the market.  I’m very positive this will change because I now have one of the beautifully designed headphones by Hed Kandi.

A very successful music brand, Hed Kandi, have defined the sound and vision of the international party scene.  The name is a modified spelling of Head Candy, which is of a resemblance to eye candy.

Eye candy is how I describe Hed Kandi Pure Kandi Headphones when I first saw them.  Oh boy, the designs were just too cute!  With colors like white/coral, blue/pink and purple, I’m sure girls will love the Hed Kandi headphones.  Guys don’t have to worry though as there’s black color meant for you 🙂

Hed Kandi Headphones have 4 different styles available:

  • Kandies (Php 490.00) – soft-touch, rubber-housed earphones with a colored 1.3 meter cable, a matching end plug and gold-plated 3.5mm jack.
  • Disco Heaven (Php 1,090.00) – Lightweight and functional headphones with ultra-thin headband and soft-touch ear- cups.
  • Discotheque (Php 1,190.00) – Stereo headphones with single-sided cable.
  • Pure Kandi (Php 1,990.00) – Stereo headphones with unique ultra-thin adjustable headband.
The Hed Kandi Pure Kandi Headphones is advertised for the frequent travelers which makes it my choice.  I certainly do have a lot more reasons why I’m loving my new Hed Kandi Pure Kandi headphones.
Before I do that, here are the technical specifications:
  • Driver diameter: 50mm
  • frequency response: 20-20,000Hz
  • impedence: 32 Ohms
  • sensitivity: 103 dB
  • max input power: 100 mW
  • cable length: 1.5m

Here’s a description of Pure Kandi from the Hed Kandi’s website:
Arouse your aural senses and book yourself a ticket to destination chic with these high-fashion headphones easily packed away with foldaway design for any jet setter’s luggage. The fashionisto in you will love the unique ultra-thin, adjustable headband suitable for any hairstyle, whilst your ears will be thanking you for the ultra soft ear-pads with metal exterior.

Like I said earlier, I have tons of reasons why I’m loving this new Pure Kandi headphones of mine.  I’ve been using it for a week.  I’m completely satisfied and I’m sure I’ll be using it more and more.  Hopefully, Hed Kandi headphones are durable as I’d be so sad if it doesn’t last a long time.

Packaging & Design

Hed Kandi Packaging

First impressions are definitely important and Hed Kandi just didn’t disappoint.  See the beautiful packaging of the Pure Kandi headphones (above photo).  The headphones are secured inside the plastic and paper packing with the beautiful artwork by Jason Brooks displayed outside the box.

The Hed Kandi Pure Kandi headphones are available in 4 colors: White/Coral (my choice), Blue/Pink, Purple and Black.  It might be targeted for the female demographic but as I said earlier, the black one is perfect for guys.

Comfort & Ease of Use

folded Hed Kandi Headphone

These Pure Kandi headphones have one of the thinnest headbands which is suitable for me as I don’t want it to mess with my hairdo.  It doesn’t look heavy too and it can match with any of my outfits.

I also appreciate that Pure Kandi headphones has very soft rubber ear cups.  As I listen to music almost the whole day, it is important that my ears don’t feel any stress after long use.

The usual problem that we have with our earphones and headphones is tangled wires.  Well, we don’t have to worry about that because Pure Kandi has this anti-tangle cable.

Pure Kandi folds in several ways which makes it perfect for frequent travelers as you can store it easily.  What I usually do is collapse the headband then twist and move the ear cups upwards.  Very easy to manage but I do wish they included a pouch.  I had to find a pouch separately so I can put the headphones in my bag together with my other gadgets.

Performance

I use the Pure Kandi headphones with my iPhone.  I’ll probably use it too when I get to jog again.

Hed Kandi Pure Kandi with iPhone

I tried the earphones with a couple of songs and I must say, I am impressed!  I especially noticed the powerful bass.  It’s very distinct and dynamic when you listen to songs like T-Shirt by Shontelle.  The performance of the Hed Kandi Pure Kandi headphones totally blew me away!  Considering its funky look, you wouldn’t notice that it would give such an outstanding sound performance!  Not to mention, how affordable it is with just Php 1,990.00.

Hed Kandi Pure Kandi Headphones is a keeper!  You will see me using this often and I wouldn’t be that conscious because of its beautiful design.  Perfect for a girl like me 😀

Feng Wei Wee

Feng Wei Wee

I always had this impression that Feng Wei Wee serves delicious food.  So when my friends asked where we can eat for dinner at Greenhills area, I recommended Feng Wei Wee.  I noticed that it was newly opened and it looked high-end, definitely a very upgraded version of their Banawe, QC branch.

As we entered the place, we immediately noticed the bakery inside the restaurant.  We initially thought that the bakery is part of the restaurant but it’s not.  It’s actually Formosa Bakery.  What’s really interesting is that the owners of Formosa Bakery and Feng Wei Wee doesn’t know each other but they share the same space.

Formosa Bakery

We went there for Feng Wei Wee so we continued on and searched for seats.  We loved the ambiance!  Feng Wei Wee was well-lighted and the chairs were pretty comfortable to sit in too!  I also appreciate good customer service.  The server was ready to recommend dishes and explain what they are.  It didn’t take a long time for us to order.  I was sure that based on my previous experience with the restaurant, the food will be good.  There’s a huge difference between the 2 branches though as I remember the Banawe branch to have a canteen setup.  I wonder if they changed their style there.

Feng Wei Wee Ambiance

Without further ado, here’s a list of our orders:

  • Kong Pao Chicken (Php 250)

Feng Wei Wee Kung Pao Chicken

I was expecting something different so I was a bit disappointed when I saw the dish.  When I got to taste it, I realized I didn’t like the taste either 🙁  Don’t get me wrong.  My friends loved it!  I guess the different flavors put into Feng Wei Wee’s version of Kong Pao Chicken wasn’t something I would like.  I initially thought that the dish would have so much spice & nuts plus the chicken would be fried & crispy but I was wrong.  Oh well.

  • Salt & Pepper Spareribs (Php 250)

Feng Wei Wee Spareribs

There isn’t much difference with this dish compared to other restaurants’ version but I must say that Feng Wei Wee cooked it perfectly.  It has the perfect combination of spices.  The pork was crispy too!  The important thing for me is that the meat wasn’t chewy like a bubble gum (I’m very particular with that).

  • Cuchay Tokwa (Php 200)

Feng Wei Wee Veggies

I’m delighted that we followed the server’s advice for us to order Cuchay Tokwa.  Cuchay is basically a type of vegetable and tofu is obviously tofu 😛  I loved the combination of the two.  I wish we could have more but the serving is only good for 2-3 persons.

  • Taiwan Fried Rice (Php 250)

Feng Wei Wee Fried Rice

Most of the fried rice dishes in the menu is good for one.  As for sharing, we had a choice between Yang Chow and Taiwan fried rice.  Taiwan fried rice was recommended.  The rice was definitely a tasty one.  It had so many ingredients in it, like chinese sausage, onions, eggs and some other stuff I can’t name anymore.  I do admit that I love to share my foodie experience through this blog but I’m really not an expert with food and worse, I can’t even cook.  So I hope you don’t expect too much from me.

  • Jasmine Tea (free)

Feng Wei Wee Jasmine Tea

Last, but definitely not the least, the Jasmine Tea.  Yes, it was a service tea and freely served.  But the jasmine tea was just too good!  Even if we were just 6, we requested for two tea pots in our table.

You see, even my friends readily posed for the camera with the Jasmine tea!  This picture should pass as a marketing material hahaha!

Feng Wei Wee Tea Friends

I’m just glad Feng Wei Wee has turned into an established restaurant.  Good job to the owners!  Before I forget, it’s Feng Wei Wee and not Feng Wei Wei (I had it misspelled for the longest time!  just check my previous post) 😛

Buenavista Viewdeck

Buenavista Viewdeck Puerto Princesa Palawan

After Viet Ville, we passed by Buenavista Viewdeck which is also on the way to Underground River.  People usually stop over at Buenavista Viewdeck to take a washroom break.

For the rest of the group, they can go inside the souvenir shop.  They can choose from the numerous products on sale which they can buy as ‘pasalubong’ to their loved ones back at home.

The souvenir shop have all sorts of things.  From keychains, musical instruments, tons of decorative displays and clothes.

Prices are reasonable.  Bloggers, who I travelled with, bought several stuff at the JAZZ souvenir shop.

If you’re really tired, you can also take a short nap at the ‘duyan’ located at the side of the souvenir store.  You can also just take a picture with it.  You don’t see ‘duyan’ that often in the city.

If you’re hungry, you can have some small meals and snacks at the back of the souvenir shop.  While eating, you can enjoy the beautiful view.

buenavista viewdeck mini restaurant

Buenavista Viewdeck is a great place to stop over as you can see Ulugan Bay from there.  Ulugan Bay is where the Vietnamese refugees landed to escape the war.  This also explains why Viet Ville is near the place.

What a wonderful view!

You can take pictures with the beautiful view as well.

A lot of people do drop by Buenavista Viewdeck as the view is just astounding!  Perfect for taking pictures.

I do think though that the 2nd structure in Buenavista View Deck is better for taking pictures.  You do have to climb the stairs but it’ll be worth it.

On top, you’ll see full view of Ulugan Bay.

If you look closer, you’ll be able to see the so-called Tres Marias.  Tres Marias is composed of three islets standing at the Ulugan Bay.

If you’re traveling to Underground River, do not forget to take a few minutes to stop over at Buenavista Viewdeck.  You’ll be so pleased as you can take home with you an awesome viewing experience.  Don’t forget to take pictures!

Viet Ville

Viet Ville Puerto Princesa Palawan

We were set to go to Underground River for the 2nd day as part of the AirPhil Express Puerto Princesa Adeventour Package.  Along the way was Viet Ville where we stopped over for a few minutes.

Viet Ville is the place where a little over a thousand Vietnamese people took refuge during the time their country, Vietnam, was ruled by communists.  They took refuge in this community located at Puerto Princesa, Palawan provided by mayor Hagedorn.

Viet Ville deserted

This small community village, Viet Ville, is a popular tourist attraction in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.  Their french bread is one of the main reasons why people kept going there.

Catholic Assistance for Displaced Persons (CADP) setup Viet Ville for the refugees.  In return, the Vietnamese refugees work for the CADP by manning the restaurant, the bake shop and the noodle factory located in Viet Ville.

The small community in Puerto Princesa is self-sufficient.  I wish we tried the restaurant but we have to stick with our itinerary.  Nevertheless, when I get the chance to go back to Puerto Princesa, I’ll make sure I’ll try to eat at Viet Ville Restaurant.

Viet Ville Souvenir Shop

According to history, there were about 1,500 Vietnamese refugees in Viet Ville when it was first setup.

Viet Ville House

However, when ethnic Vietnamese lawyers based in United States and Australia started helping the refugees to go abroad, a lot of them left the community.  This is particularly visible when you go the place.  It looked deserted but actually there were Vietnamese refugees who decided to stay in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.  Some reasons may be they’re contented already or may have married Filipinos.

Viet Ville Walkway

We toured the place for like 15-20 minutes and just took pictures in the churches inside Viet Ville.  There were catholic and protestant churches.  There was a temple there too!
