To the real fathers’ :
whose wallet does not contain thick moneybills but is thick with pictures of his family and lots of discount cards and coupons.
whose pride is not having lots of women but loving and caring for one in his life.
whose abs are not well defined, but whose childrens’ future is.
whose hobbies are not golf or gulp, but working and making ends meet.
whose dreams are not getting famous, or getting filthy rich. but having a happy family.
Happy Father’s Day!

Flying Sky Lanterns at Boracay
Posted by Rochelle Sy Chua On June 14, 2010

Boracay is in itself a paradise. So, it was such a joy that we were finally able to have our offsite office teambuilding at Boracay. Everyone was just excited that of all the places we could have the teambuilding, it was in the beautiful beaches of Boracay that it was held. While we had a lot of activities to do because of the teambuilding, and in Boracay there’s also a lot of things they have for the tourists, we were able to create our very own activities too.
One of our colleagues brought Sky Lanterns with him. During our last night, we helped launch about 4-5 of those sky lanterns. It was such a great sight! I bet the other Boracay visitors thought it was one of the gimiks of Boracay hahahaha! We had like tons of people for an audience in just several minutes!

Sky Lanterns which are also called fire balloons are lanterns that go airborne. They are created from oiled rice paper & a bamboo frame. At the bottom, there’s sort of a ball of wax that you light up in order to heat the lantern and make it go airborne. Sometimes, a candle and a base for the candle is used instead of the ball of wax. Either way, it’s the flame that heats up the air inside so that the lantern can rise.

It was said to be created by the Chinese & was considered the 1st hot air balloon. Wow, who would have thought that these simple yet elegant beautiful little lanterns could have been the first ever hot air balloons!
Lantern festivals are actually held in countries like Thailand & China. Well, we, on the other hand, created our own mini lantern festival in the beautiful beaches of Boracay! 🙂

In the video below, you can see the sky lantern in action. It was such a great joy watching them rise and go airborne. Especially when I realized that it was in the dark of the night, with the beautiful beaches surrounding us, and the waters just beside us, it was really such a wonderful sight to personally see. When the lanterns are far, far away, they will look like stars in the sky but with a different color though hehehe 😛 Instead of color white, they look like small yellow stars. Well, as long as the flame is alive, the sky lantern will be airborne.
I’m glad I was part of the mini-lantern festival that we had at Boracay. Since lantern festivals don’t happen in Manila, it was great to experience first-hand what sky lanterns are & how it works. And having the mini-lantern festival in the beautiful beaches of Boracay, it turned out to be just perfect!

A Different View

During the summer, I had a problem. It was really hot. Our house was made out of four-inch concrete and tiles for floor. I was like a pig in an oven. I can’t sleep well. Two fans just won’t make it. The cost of an air conditioner is about Php 10,000. But I’m too cheap to buy one, because I think it’s not just Php 10,000. It’s more!
When you buy an appliance, you also pay for its electricity. Electricity costs money. The estimated cost is about another Php 1,000 (at least) a month. In a year that’s Php 12,000. (Php 1,000 x 12 months). That’s assuming no increase in electricity will happen— ever! Of course you know it’s not true.
The total cost is about P22,000 and increasing. (Php 10,000 for the appliance, Php 12,000 a year for the electricity.)
How much would I need to invest to make Php 12,000 a year? Let’s assume I could get an investment with a return of 6% a year. (Pause for a while and refresh your math operations to answer this.)
The answer is Php 200,000. Divide Php 12,000 by 6% to get this amount. (Now you know how powerful your fourth grade math is.) If I’ll have Php 200,000 and invest it at 6% return yearly, I’ll receive Php 12,000 every year to support my electricity expenses.
But what if electric rates increases again? How will we able to cover our expenses? (Some nose bleed terms of offsetting or covering or matching are: hedging, squaring, netting)
To answer this question, let us ask a simple question: Who gets the benefit when electric rates increase? (This is not a trick question. The answer is not Nobody.)
Answer: Power Producers.
How do we become an owner of power producers? Some companies are traded in the stock exchange. (A stock exchange is a place where stocks, which represents ownership rights of a corporation, are bought and sold.) We could buy the stocks at the right price. The increase in our electric bill expenses would mean an increase of the income of the power producer companies we would own which could then translate to an increase in its stock price and a profit for us. The profit would then be able to pay for the increased electric bill. Sounds simple. But the truth is that it’s more complicated than that.
What did I do? I really can’t take it anymore. Sooooo, on the late summer month of May, I bought the cheapest available air conditioner with the highest EER (A higher EER is supposed to mean more efficient use of energy and a lower electric bill.) I’m now forced to make at least P200,000 to support it passively (I’ll give myself until end of this year to make it) or… I could become a Power Ranger and look for power producers to own.
(P.S. Two cheap air conditioners I saw are Korean brands. I won’t tell you the brands until they pay me advertising fees and I don’t own the company who makes them.)

While most found the mobile scanner interesting, I had my eyes for the HP OfficeJet 4500 All-in-One. They also raffled off one printer, I wished I won but anyhow, maybe this is a sign for me to go out and just purchase one. Let’s see 🙂
HP really has done a great job of offering a variety of new printers that will suit any lifestyle and need, but most importantly their focus on efficiency and energy savings is what I think they did particularly well on — their auto-on/auto-off technology should also be commended. I think HP printers have always been some of the top printers out there, especially when it comes to home use too. The price range for these printers aren’t all that bad either, and with a variety to choose from, they have really thought of everyone with this new product lineup.
Like most events recently, there was a photo booth outside the venue. I got a souvenir photo from there. Rest of the photos are in my Flickr album.

5 Things I’m Excited about iOS 4
Posted by Rochelle Sy Chua On June 9, 2010

Most of us gadget freaks who are based in Manila must have lacked some sleep yesterday. This was because Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) was held 1-3AM Manila time early Tuesday morning. So many people, including myself, just wanted to know exactly the new great things that Apple would show us. There were a lot of things that were expected but then the event ended up being solely about our beloved iPhone.
I own 2 iPhone units, the 1st generation iPhone & iPhone 3GS. Steve Jobs presented the new iPhone 4. As much as I want to have one, I’ll stick with my 3GS. What I’m really excited about is the iPhone software update called iOS 4.
Here are 5 reasons why I’m so excited to download the new iPhone OS when it comes out this month:
- Multi-tasking
This just shows that Apple is listening to us. We have been complaining for 2 years that we wanted to be able to switch between applications. We thought it would never happen but then, finally here it is! Apple is just making sure that when they do that, it would be perfect. They assured us that with this capability, application & battery performance won’t be compromised. I’ve been using Skype heavily on my iPhone. It has always been a challenge whenever I receive a text message while in a Skype call. I can’t read text messages & when I accidentally press read, my Skype call would automatically be cut off. I’ve been wishing for this to be fixed. Plus, I would like to be able to read text messages, read emails or even surf the net while using Skype. iOS 4 fixes that personal need of mine. I’m so happy! Can’t wait to download the updated OS. Please let time fly fast. I need it now, please? - Folders
The page limit in the iPhone is such a pain for iPhone addicts like me. With thousands of awesome applications available for the iPhone, we can’t access them all in our phone. I have to either perform a jailbreak on my iPhone or just choose my favorite apps to keep on my phone and let the rest be in my iTunes application folder.
Another reason why I so want this feature is because I’m a bit OCD (Obsessive Compulsive). I want my iPhone screen to be clean. I would really love to organize all games into one folder, all productivity applications in one folder, all social networking apps into another and so on.. This is a must-have for me! Finally, I don’t need to go through the tedious task of jailbreaking my iPhone. - iBooks
Ever since the iPad came out, I have been wishing that iPhone would have iBooks as an application too. Wow, Steve Jobs must have heard me (don’t know how though hehehe!). I used to spend thousands of pesos buying books every year. I stopped buying a few years ago and ended up just downloading eBooks instead then I ventured into audiobooks. With iBooks though, being such an eyecandy, it seems Apple is really trying to bring the convenience of reading eBooks to all its loyal customers and fanbase. With colored screen, you can just use your finger to flip through pages, awesome bookshelf design, I have found the solution that I have always wanted! Instead of keeping all my books in the shelves or tirelessly trying to find better audiobooks or ebooks, we now have iBooks! A one-stop shop to look for books & have the ability to bring all of them on your phone? It’s just wow! - Improved Mail
I have several mail accounts although my official email is my yahoo. With the current iPhone software, we have to organize our emails separately by account. With the improved mail in iOS 4, we can now see all our emails in just one screen and have the ability and the option to organize them and treat as one! Apple is just pure genius! - Home Screen Wallpaper
Another wish came true for me. Not being able to change the background image of our screen is just plain boring. I would probably change it every chance I get, and would want it to match with my current mood. Great that we can do that soon with our iPhones! One more wish that I hope will come true are themes! Be able to change the application icons and match it with the background image. Will it come true? Let’s see, maybe for iOS 5?
The 5 things I mentioned are not the only ones we should expect with Apple’s iOS 4. There are more improvements & updates such as being able to create playlists on our own iPhone, 5x camera zoom (sweet!), video focus, faces & places in photo (it’s not exclusive to iPhoto anymore!), spellcheck, wireless keyboard support & the ability to give apps as gifts to friends/family.
I wish time would really move faster, I really want those features ASAP on my iPhone! It’s sad that it won’t have an effect on my 1st generation iPhone but at least I still have iPhone 3GS! 😀 Better things ahead for us iPhone users!
Now let’s recite: We LOVE Apple products! 😀
